From Mexican fusion restaurants to hole-in-the-wall cafes, here's where you can get your taco and tequila fix this Cinco de Mayo

We can’t go wrong with Mexican food, and many of us love to scour the island for the best tacos, burrito bowls and Mexican Mules.

There is no better time to hunt for these best eats than this week, as Mexican restaurants and bars are offering special deals, parties and a ton of tequila in honour of Cinco de Mayo. The holiday, which falls on May 5, celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.

If you are looking for a place to celebrate the holiday, keep reading for some Mexican restaurants in Singapore that you might not have heard of yet.

1. Mezcla

Fusion food is all the rage now and Japanese-Mexican restaurant Mezcla has jumped on the trend with gusto.

Located along Craig Road, Mezcla boasts a concise but well-thought-out menu of food and cocktails. The star though would have to be its tacos, which seamlessly blend Mexican and Japanese flavours.

While all of its eight tacos are unique in their own ways, one of the most special ones is the salmon tacos, which come in a crispy salmon skin ‘shell’ filled with salmon sashimi, roe and spring onions.

Another must-try is the uni and scallop tacos, which feature a deep-fried seaweed taco filled to the brim with uni, hotate and ikura.

2. Chico Loco

When it comes to Mexican food, rotisserie chicken is not the first thing that comes to mind. But Super Loco Group’s Chico Loco has made it its unique selling point.

The must-try here is the Mexican roast chicken, comprising chicken that has been brined for eight hours, coated in a special blend of spices, and slow-cooked on a rotisserie for a succulent finish. Alternatively, you can opt for the equally delicious spice-rubbed lamb leg. Both come with two sides.

These proteins pair well with rice. We highly recommend having it with the chicken fat rice, cooked with ginger, spring onions and green apple.

3. Comida Mexicana

If you are looking for a simple Mexican meal that does not scrimp on quality, Comida Mexicana is the perfect place to try. We highly recommend the crab and avocado quesadillas, soft cheese turnovers that have been stuffed with the freshest Australian blue crabs, fresh avocados and tangy garlic butter.

4. Viva Loca

A Mexican and Indian fusion restaurant is not one that you commonly see in Singapore, but Viva Loca does it perfectly.

Enjoy some of its interesting creations such as vegetarian tacos, which consist of chickpeas, eggplant, pinto beans, corn, jalapenos and a medley of sweet peppers and cheddar cheese.

5. El Mero Mero

Located within Chijmes, El Mero Mero is a fantastic option for Cinco de Mayo with its unique takes on classic Mexican dishes. You’ll want to try its Corn Sampler, which gives you grilled baby corn instead of an entire cob of corn. It is easier to eat and so much more flavourful.

Another interesting dish is the Wagyu Volcan; it is essentially burnt cheese set atop a crunchy tortilla topped with thinly sliced and tender beef. It’s smoky and addictive and the perfect addition to any table.

6. Platypus Cantina

Located along Katong, Platypus Cantina offers an extensive selection of classic Mexican dishes, such as masa corn tacos, baja habanero chicken and Cantina fries (which are best enjoyed with its carne asada beef and margaritas). It also has some incredible pasta dishes and burrito bowls.

7. Cha Cha Cha Mexican Restaurant

As one of Singapore’s oldest Mexican restaurants, it’s honestly a surprise that Cha Cha Cha isn’t more well-known.

If you are feeling more indulgent, you’ll want to kick your meal off with its deep-fried tapas. These are tortillas stuffed with chicken and beef that are deep-fried and served with sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo.

Another must-try is its sopa de tortilla, or tomato soup served with tortillas, sour cream, kidney beans, cheese, and black olives.

8. Nixta Mexican Grill & Bar

Nixta Mexican Grill & Bar is one of those places you have to try at least once. Why? The meat dishes are roasted on an open fire, salsas are made by hand in volcanic stone molcajetes, and fresh masa is ground daily for its signature corn tortillas.

For something special, try its blue crab tlayuda. This dish features a thin and crispy corn tortilla that is baked on a grill and served with diablo sauce and chilli oil.

9. Hola Mexico

Hola Mexico is the place to go for traditional Mexican street food.

Drop by for a meal and try its Tex-Mex in a Bowl. This dish is similar to a burrito bowl and includes ingredients like grilled peppers, beans, salsa, roasted chillis, tomatoes, Mexican rice and your choice of meat. It’s hearty, filling and the perfect meal.

10. El Cocinero

The menu consists of many Mexican classics but we highly recommend its carnitas quesadilla, or flour tortillas filled with melted cheese and tender pork shoulder.

Another must-try is the Barbacoa Tacos, which features chunks of lamb shoulder that have been oven roasted for eight hours in banana leaves for maximum tenderness and flavour.
