Find out where these bartenders' favourite haunts for supper are

Where do you go when you are craving a hearty meal in the late hours of the night? Whether your hunger pangs are keeping you from falling asleep, or you have just come from a night of drinking, finding a restaurant while ravenous in the early hours proves considerably difficult.

Who better to ask than these seasoned bartenders, with jobs that keep them up until the crack of dawn. We speak to Amanda Wan Winchester of Three X Co, Darwin Ng of Jann KL, Angel Ng Ji of Triptyk, and Affie Adut of Here & Now, who divulge their go-to supper spots after a long night of work.

Restoran Meng Kee Grill Fish

“Meng Kee Grilled Fish on Jalan Alor is my go-to for out-of-towners for their grilled chicken fish and stingray. I order a serving of the basil mussels from the shop next door to them as well, and it is also close to Wong Ah Wah grilled chicken wings, which is always a plus!”

Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar

“Visit Kayu Nasi Kandar at Bangsar’s Telawi for the usual mamak fare which includes mee goreng, roti telur, and my favourite, tah halia kurang manis for that warm tummy goodness before bed!”

Hai Di Lao

“Hai Di Lao is my guilty pleasure for late night cravings and long night chats with friends that I have not caught up with in a while with herbal soup, assorted snacks, and air-conditioning! Plus, they close at 5am, which is fantastic for night owls like us.”

Da Cheng Lok Lok

“I like to have supper at Da Cheng Lok Lok in Sri Petaling. While a little out of the way for some, to me, it is only a detour from the route home.

Lok lok is something I can have when I just want to munch on two sticks, or when I want a meal of 30 sticks! I like the choices of condiments provided from the classic satay sauce to the different types of chilli sauce (but I usually just go for the sour one).

What I like most about Da Cheng, though, is that rainy day or not, you still have parking and covered seats!”

Restoran Sing Pao Dim Sum

“Why Restoran Sing Pao Dim Sum? Because it closes late, it is near my house, they allow you to buy beer at 7-11 and drink it there, and lastly, it is so affordable at RM3 per plate, and they don’t skimp on portions!”

Mee Tarik Restoran

“I used to go here just after the pandemic, but honestly, portions have reduced, and as they got more popular, getting seats is tougher. However, it still tastes good, and it is a no-brainer for me to head there if I am downtown because who doesn’t like spicy broth after getting tipsy?”

Restoran Dai Sam Yum

“I would say during weekdays, since we close slightly earlier, the team usually grabs some late-night dim sum at Dai Sam Yum. It is one of the best and authentic dim sum we can get in town!”

New World Thai Food

“If it’s a weekend, we drive all the way to Jalan Alor for Thai hawker food, specifically New World Thai Food located at the end of the street. Nothing beats having good Tom Kha Gai and salted squid egg after heavy weekend shifts.”
