Terai India Dry Gin

The white spirit is rooted in the London Dry Gin traditions but has a distinctly Indian profile and character that makes it a versatile drink

When it comes to gin, we are familiar with brands like Roku Gin from Japan, Monkey 47 from Germany, and Hendrick’s from Scotland. But have you tried one that is from India? Now you can, as Terai India Dry Gin has finally launched in Singapore.

Shares founder Shekhar Swarup: “We’ve worked hard to create a world-class product that does justice to the geography and heritage of India. We are excited to be sharing Terai with more of the world, especially in Singapore, a country with such a solid place on the global drinks scene and a market that we are very much looking forward to being a part of.”

Named after the Indian region of Terai, which runs along the foothills of the Himalayas, this spirit is crafted according to the London Dry Gin style but has a distinctly Indian profile and character.

Crafted at the India Craft Spirit Co.—India’s first single gin craft distillery—the base is a rice spirit infused with 11 select botanicals, among which are juniper berries, tulsi or holy basil, coriander, fennel, lemon peel, orange peel, lavender, rose, almond, angelica and orris root.

The expression is distilled in a custom-made copper pot by German manufacturer Carl Gmbh, and is blended with other indigenous ingredients found in Khari Baoli, the largest spice market in Asia. In the final stages of perfecting the recipe, Terai even collaborated with Proof & Company to ensure its clean, fresh and well-rounded flavours. That said, you can drink the gin on ice, mixed with tonic, or as a base to your favourite cocktails.

Even the packaging is steeped in Indian culture and history references. Its unique bottle was inspired by the carved pillars that are often seen in Indian architecture, while the stopper was designed to look like a beautifully lacquered wooden toy you’ll often find in the city of Channapatna. The label, meanwhile, has an embossed wreath that incorporates the vintage Indian Rupee coins and the 11 botanicals used to create the gin.

Terai India Dry Gin is now available at some of the island’s best bars and restaurants, including 28 Hongkong Street (which is offering a Terai Gin cocktail promotion until June 2022), Alley Bar, The Elephant Room, Publico Ristorante and Revolver.
