This new initiative is done in collaboration with Ecospirits, in hopes of developing a more sustainable bar culture in Singapore
In recent years, environmental awareness has been on the rise, with waste reduction being a big initiative in the F&B industry. Whether it’s reducing the use of plastic straws, managing energy consumption, or incorporating nose-to-tail dining, various restaurants and bars have shifted its focus to support this cause. While plastic and food waste are some of the biggest culprits in the industry’s waste production and carbon emissions, another is glass.
According to the National Environmental Agency, 70 000 tonnes of glass were generated in 2021. Of which, 87 per cent of it goes straight to Singapore’s landfill. This number is alarming, especially when glass bottles are infinitely recyclable.

Fortunately, various brands have noticed this statistic and have taken steps to help reduce glass waste—and championing this cause is Pernod Ricard, one of the world’s largest wine and spirits companies. Together with circular economy technology company, Ecospirits, Pernod Richard’s latest initiative is a pilot program that aims to eliminate bottle packaging in the bar industry. The program, which had begun on October 4, will last for 6 months.

The pilot program will see Pernod Richard spirits transported in Ecototes, fully refillable and reusable 4.5 litre glass containers that hope to alleviate single-use glass for spirits.
Various Singapore bars are currently slated to take part in this program, including Mo Bar, Republic Bar Singapore and Smoke & Mirrors. These bars will be serving up sustainably crafted cocktails that feature spirits including Absolut Vodka, Beefeater London Dry Gin, and Havana Club Rum.

“We’re thrilled to start this journey with Ecospirits to create more sustainable and responsible moments of conviviality. [This] launch marks a key milestone in our commitment to circular making and distribution,” shares managing director of Pernod Ricard Southeast Asia, Jean Touboul.
The program hopes to eliminate over 4,000 kg of glass waste and reduce over 3,000 kg of carbon emissions within the first six months, making a significant step towards a more sustainable bar culture.
