Sixty years in the making, Wildmoor draws from one of the most extensive whisky collections in the world
With its arcane moors, glassy lochs, and craggy highlands, Scotland’s striking landscape has long captured the human imagination. The mercurial drama of sky, rock, water, and wind evokes its wild spirit—an atlas of ancient islands that have remained untamed through time. Wildmoor, a new high-aged blended Scotch whisky by family-owned distiller William Grant & Sons, nods to Scotland’s otherworldly nature’s wonders.
Master blender Brian Kinsman, a scientist by training who first joined the team in 1997 as a whisky chemist, has delved into personal memories of his homeland to distill a flavour map of Scotland with Wildmoor’s dynamic range of whiskies. “In the same way we’re inspired by a view or an occasion, I’ve recreated how majestic places in Scotland have made me feel with Wildmoor,” he says. We’re all familiar with how film or food can be imbued with a sense of place, and Wildmoor is now breaking new ground by doing the same with whisky.

The collection starts out with Wildmoor Dark Moorland: 23 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky. It homes in on the wind-swept moors with its rich flavours, a result from blending Highland and Speyside malts with Lowland grain whisky, finished in an oloroso sherry cask. Rich oak, deep vanilla, and mellow sherry spice set the scene for the moorland’s sweeping vistas. While best enjoyed neat or with ice, it is also the perfect base for a great classic Rob Roy. The Wildmoor Rugged Coast: 30 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky takes cues from Scotland’s western coastline with its big and bold flavours. Distinct notes of sea salt, vanilla, bonfire smoke, and sherry spice summon the briny air and crashing waves, whisking you to the jagged shores.

Wildmoor has been decades in the making. The William Grant & Sons family presciently acquired and curated a vast reserve of rare, high-aged malt and grain whiskies over 60 years ago from all around Scotland, each selected for its distinctive character. These whiskies have been patiently matured, shaped by Scotland’s elemental forces to bring out depth and nuance. It is a collection that is considered one of the finest private reserves of rare whiskies in the world—one that is finally unlocked with Wildmoor.
Kinsman had originally envisioned crafting one whisky when he first started exploring the family’s private whisky vaults, but the sheer variety and complexity took on a life of its own, resulting in a series of revered and prestigious blended whiskies. The oldest expression in the collection is Wildmoor Black Mountain 40 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky, which shares the imposing nature of Northern Scotland’s peaks. Made from an intense blend of rare grain and Highland malts, it has been enhanced by precious stocks from ghost distilleries and finished in a Pedro Ximénez cask. The extraordinary outcome includes delicate notes of vanilla, caramel, and orange peel, with hints of tobacco and spice.

In the same spirit of Wildmoor breaking new ground with uncharted flavour territories, every bottle brings with it an invitation to venture into the wild. The mystery and magic of Scotland’s landscapes have been Wildmoor’s biggest source of inspiration, and it hopes that whisky enthusiasts uncover the same wonder by reconnecting with nature, particularly in a world that is touched by technology in every way. For boundary-pushing explorer and Wildmoor’s adventurer ambassador Aldo Kane, there’s nothing quite like enjoying these whiskies in the great outdoors. “I have travelled the world for over 30 years, I can honestly say that time spent in nature with friends and the taste of whisky next to a fire is unbeatable,” he says.
Wildmoor invites us to unplug and go slow—like how the best whiskies are savoured. With every dram, time will find a way to stand still, transporting you to the majestic Caledonian wilderness.
