If Hong Kong’s airport tells you about the city is that it’s a top destination for many travellers—it’s one of the busiest airports in the world, at least pre-pandemic. With the current 21-day quarantine requirement, getting into the city is much harder. But once normal travel returns, we can count on Hongkongers hopping on a plane for a quick weekend getaway or curing their travel blues by travelling further away.
Travel has been off the cards for many in the past two years but there’s some silver lining in 2022. According to Expedia’s recent vaccination and travel survey, Hongkongers are optimistic and ready to travel overseas in the coming year. In fact, more are looking forward to taking an international trip, with the majority saying that are planning a trip in 2022.
Are you also planning a trip in 2022 but not sure where to go? We asked Catherine So, the managing director of Expedia Group in the Asia Pacific region, about the top destinations that Hong Kong travellers are booking and why.
Catherine So: The relaxation of quarantine restrictions for travellers from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom has certainly played a positive role in placing London as a top searched destination, according to Expedia’s search data. Over the years, London has ranked among the top ten searched destinations, but its attraction to appeal to the higher education sector has pushed its position to the top of the search list for 2021.
