4. Hometown Cha Cha Cha

How can we talk about heartwarming shows without recommending Korean dramas? If that line from Rihana’s We Found Love—“we found love in a hopeless place”—was ever a plot, then Hometown Cha Cha Cha fits perfectly.

This K-drama tells the story of Yoon Hye-jin (Shin Min-a), a dentist from Seoul who moves to a seaside village where she meets the dependable handyman, Hong Du-sik (Kim Seon-ho). What started off as a frisky relationship soon turned into a heartwarming love story, particularly as the Seoulite finds herself unable to adjust to her new life and the local scoops into her rescue every time.

More than Yoon and Hong’s love story, there are other heartwarming moments such as Hong’s grandmotherly relationship with Kim Gam-ri (Kim Young-ok).

5. Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories

Shows that offer food are always comforting so you’ll never go wrong with this one. Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is based on the popular manga, Shinya Shokudo and centres around a small diner in Tokyo where the owner makes any dish you ask of him.

We learn about the people that request them but also what they request and eat says about them. We might not speak the same language, but food is a cultural landmark that connects us and this show highlights that perfectly.

If you love Japan as most Hongkongers do, this will also hit you with nostalgia as you recall your time in the country. The tone is soft and the pace is slow which makes it a great rainy day watch.

Another classic trope played out here is the enemies turned lovers. In high school, Kook and Choi are like cats and dogs but eventually become each other’s first love. As adults, the feelings they had in their youth, continue to haunt them and we watch them reconcile and forgive each other.
