National Day celebrations are back in full swing—here are the best ways to join in on the festivities happening around the island
The pandemic put a damper on our National Day celebrations over the last two years, so you can expect things to be taken up a notch in 2022. Fireworks, parades, concerts—we’ll get the whole shebang as our nation celebrates its 57th birthday bash on August 9.
How to capitalise on all the excitement? Below, discover our round-up of things to see and do around to island to show off your patriotic pride this month.

1. Catch the fireworks

You won’t need a ticket to the National Day Parade to catch the fireworks this year. Come Tuesday evening, expect Marina Bay to come alive with a keen-eyed crowd looking up at the spectacular displays in the sky. If you’re hoping to join them, be sure to choose the best spot by first checking out the Crowd@MarinaBay map, which assesses the crowd levels at One Fullerton Waterfront, Esplanade Waterfront, Marina Bay Sands Waterfront and The Promontory Waterfront in real-time.
Between 8.15 pm and 8.25 pm, fireworks will also be set off at five heartland locations around the island. These dazzling displays will be open to the public on a first-come-first-served basis at the following locations: the Jurong West Stadium, the Woodlands Stadium, the Bedok Stadium, the Former Tampines Junior College and the open field beside the Ang Mo Kio Library.
2. Watch the Red Lions Freefall
The Singapore Armed Forces Parachute Team, better known as the Red Lions, are a crowd favourite whenever Singapore’s birthday comes around. This year, the team of parachutists will carry out their annual tradition of conducting freefall jumps around the island. What makes this year’s performance even more special is that, for the first time, it includes three women parachutists.
Don’t miss the spectacles taking place at two locations on August 7: at the open field beside the Bishan MRT station between 8.40 am and 9.30 am, and at another field along North Buona Vista Rod, near the Ghim Moh Food Market between 9.10 am to 10 am.

3. Take your family to a carnival
We can’t count all the number of ways to have fun at the various carnivals popping up all over the island from August 6 as part of the National Day Parade 2022 Heartland Celebrations. We can assure you, however, that there’s something for everyone in the family.
Music fans, for example, can show their love for local artists at the One Heart @ North East carnival, where the likes of Hady Mirza, Supersonic and Taufik Batisah will be throwing live performances. Those with a taste for sports can head to the Celebrating Togetherness @ South East carnival to take part in bubble football matches and archery tag games.
Family Bliss @ North West will no doubt draw a younger crowd with its carnival rides, while Celebrate with Our Stars @ South West will let you do just that with the live music performances and stargazing activities lined up.

4. Enjoy the National Day Light-Up

Six historical landmarks will come alive in the colours of the Singapore flag all throughout the month as part of the annual National Day Light-Up. The locations, chosen for their significance to Singapore’s heritage, are the National Museum of Singapore, Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, Central Fire Station, The Cathay, National Design Centre and Stamford Arts Centre. Drop by these spots after 7.30 pm from now until August 27 for a great shot for the ‘gram.
5. Sing your heart out at the first-ever SingNation!
It’s karaoke, but make it patriotic at the first SingNation! event happening on August 6. Held at the Capitol Singapore, the sing-along will feature familiar tunes to those who call Singapore home, including iconic NDP Theme songs. There will also be a performance by local band The Passerby, and you can shop for handcrafted trinkets at the Made-In-SG outdoor bazaar.

6. Sit in on the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s National Day Concert
On August 13, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and local instrumental band the Lorong Boys will come together for a special concert to celebrate local music. You won’t want to miss tunes like Dick Lee’s Home and the national anthem be reinterpreted for the concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall, so be sure to get your tickets.
