While Holidate doesn’t have many twists and turns, it’s exactly the kind of formula we’ve been craving from our favourite rom-coms that’ll totally warm your heart and boost your mood. The film follows a young woman, Sloane Benson (Emma Roberts), who hates the festive season in part because she’s always single and couldn't meet her family’s expectations that she can find the right person. She then meets Jackson (Luke Bracey) by chance when both are returning presents they received, and the two agree to be one another’s faux dates all year long.

If you love romance flicks but want something different to watch, Carol is the perfect option. This moving, beautifully acted drama explores the intimate relationship between two women—Carol (Cate Blanchett), a glamorous, dignified woman going through a broken marriage; and Therese (Rooney Mara), a young photographer on the verge of sexual awakening. The much-loved HBO series, Sex and the City returned as a film with the four female friends—Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte back in action four years after the drama ended. This is not the best family flick, but it’s perfect for anyone who is looking for untroubled thrills to celebrate the big night.

Love. Time travel. Rom-com. Need we say more? The next night after a disappointing New Year party, Tim learns about his inherited ability to go back in time from his father. He uses his power to make himself return to the party and tries not to be socially awkward this time. He then meets the girl of his dreams again, and shares a memorable New Year’s Eve kiss with her. In addition to being a great holiday movie, this romantic tale is a reminder to live in the moment.

A sequel to the 1984 film, Ghostbusters II returned to the screen with everyone’s favourite ghost catchers—Peter, Egon, Ray and Winston. The group discovers a massive river of slime and suspicious spectral activity in New York City, and there begins the fight to defeat the evil creature. The ending of all the New Yorkers gathered to sing “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve and help combat the ghost together, will bring you some holiday cheer and inspire you to let go of burdens to make 2022 your happiest year yet.

The adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic might not have anything to do with New Year’s Eve, but it’s a visually and emotionally beautiful film to watch. You’ll see gorgeous dresses, opulent homes and glamourous party backdrops—all the elements that defined the luxurious decadence of the Jazz Age in America.
