Vacheron Constantin unveils a new American 1921 and an ultra-thin self-winding movement

The pursuit of elegance is at the foundation of every Vacheron Constantin creation. This year, the maison brings that philosophy to life with two novelties from different eras—the vintage-inspired Historiques American 1921 and a modern Overseas.

The American 1921 was conceived with driving in mind. Its off-centre dial, offset by 45 degrees from the perpendicular, makes it easy for the driver to check the time on their wrist. One of the most charming offerings from Vacheron Constantin, it features a cushion-shaped case with stylised Arabic numerals against a clean dial with a small seconds window.

The new American 1921 comes in an 18k 5N pink gold case in 36.5mm or 40mm, with a silver dial, bright blue numerals and 18k gold hands. Different finishes lend it depth and clarity, from the grainage on the main dial to the satin finish on the periphery and the snailing of the seconds counter. Certified by the Hallmark of Geneva, which guarantees superior craftsmanship and precision, the watch is powered by the manual-winding Calibre 4400 AS with 4Hz frequency and 65 hours of power reserve.

LESS IS MORE

From a manual watch to an automatic, the new limited-to-255 Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin beckons with a sleek 950 platinum case in 39.5mm and a salmon dial with sunburst finishing. But the real headline beats beneath the surface. Calibre 2550 is the result of seven years of development, and it doesn’t disappoint. Measuring only 2.4mm in thickness with a robust power reserve of 80 hours, the ultra-thin movement features three innovative solutions.

First, its bi-directional micro-rotor in platinum is integrated into the mainplate. Though it features two barrels, they are stacked on top of each other in an inverted orientation, removing the need for a second barrel cover. Meanwhile, the gear train is constructed on a single level. Combined, they significantly reduce thickness.

The components are finished in accordance with the recommendations of the Hallmark of Geneva, from the circular graining of the mainplate and the bevelled bridges decorated with Geneva stripes to the micro-rotor’s polished motif evoking a compass rose.

A retro-looking timepiece given a modern touch. A thoroughly contemporary wristwatch with an inventive heartbeat. Two expressions of elegance. Which one calls to you?
