Cover Five luxury watches for creative minds

From Richard Mille to Audemars Piguet, these luxury watches reflect artistry, innovation and the creative spirit of their wearers.

If creators shape the world, the world in turn offers them an infinite source of inspiration, a continuous flow of experiences, emotions and ideas that inform their work. Luxury watches exist within that ongoing dialogue, bridging human ingenuity and personal expression. They are more than objects; they are vessels that allow creators to converse with the world, carrying subtle traces of identity, flashes of inspiration and inner resonance. In this exchange, each watch becomes a silent witness to the passage of time, preserving not only fleeting moments but also the very essence of its owner’s spirit. On the wrist, these timepieces mark each beat of the minute and second, yet they tell a separate, intimate story of ambition, resilience and character, reflecting the wearer’s journey through life as much as their creative vision.

Creativity rarely flows in a straight line, a truth embodied in the Richard Mille RM 72‑01 Lifestyle Chronograph. More than a successor to the RM 11 Flyback Chronograph, it reflects a dialogue between performance art and precision engineering. Choreographer Benjamin Millepied and composer Thomas Roussel contributed to its conception, decoding the RM 72‑01 through Within, an emotive dance performed at Joshua Tree. Crafted by a team of technicians in Les Breuleux, Switzerland, this “time machine” becomes a meeting point where art and mechanics speak the same language: creativity.

The RM 72‑01 encourages non-linear visual thinking, evident in its dial layout: three sub-dials placed at 1 o’clock, 5 o’clock and 9 o’clock create an unusual rhythm, reflecting how a creator engages with composition, colour and proportion. Orange, blue, white and red dominate, producing a contrast reminiscent of modern abstract art, as if the dial were a miniature painting.

Meanwhile, the tonneau (wine barrel) shape is softer than earlier RM models. It retains technical sophistication but embraces a more fluid aesthetic, in line with the “Lifestyle Chronograph” ethos. This watch suits those who set their own tempo: stage performers, directors, content creators and artistic athletes. Beyond its Flyback Chronograph function, allowing continuous timekeeping without resetting, it symbolises continuity, reinvention and progress.

In a world where beauty follows symmetry and geometry, the Cartier Crash stands as a conscious rupture. Launched in 1967 at Cartier London amid the modernist movement, it represented a radical act of creativity shaped as much by society as by technique.

Its distorted, asymmetrical “melting” design is more than visual provocation; it celebrates individuality and spontaneity. The name “Crash” suggests a break in form, but also carries irony and randomness, echoing an anecdote of a Cartier Baignoire watch deformed in an accident in 1967. Whether true or not, this ambiguity adds to the legend.

Beneath its eccentric exterior, the Cartier Crash preserves the classic values and mechanical integrity of luxury watches. From early models using Jaeger-LeCoultre movements to Cartier’s hand-wound calibre 9618 MC, each mechanism embodies craftsmanship, durability and watchmaking tradition. Limited production from vintage to skeleton versions and auction results exceeding US$1 million underline that the Crash is for connoisseurs, not the crowd.

It is no coincidence that the name “Land-Dweller” resonates as a call to those who live by movement, always seeking and rarely pausing. Drawing inspiration from the Oysterquartz sports design of the 1970s, a defining memory for enthusiasts of vintage luxury watches, the Land-Dweller revives an iconic silhouette while expanding the scope of expression with refined proportions: 36 or 40mm in diameter, only 9.7mm thick, offering a comfortable and elegant fit, perfect for those constantly active across diverse environments.

The luminescent hour markers are placed unconventionally, with details at 6 and 9 o’clock inspired by the Explorer line, balancing functionality with a spirit of adventure and individuality.

Unveiled as the opening watch at Watches & Wonders 2024, the MP-11 drew immediate attention, not just for its 14-day power reserve, but for how it challenges aesthetic conventions. Encased in a transparent 45mm sapphire case, the watch openly displays its mechanical heart, redefining the interplay between form and function, content and expression.

Technically, the MP-11 reflects an industrial philosophy: to maintain two weeks of power, Hublot designed the HUB9011 movement with seven barrels in series. The 90-degree drive with a helical gear mimics the “endless screw” principle, offering both a mathematical challenge and a poetic metaphor for an infinite, ever-evolving movement.

The multi-layered dial, featuring a power reserve indicator roller as a miniature “mechanical landscape”, adds visual depth. The synthetic sapphire material, transparent yet robust, highlights Hublot’s skill in manipulating materials for luxury watches, both safeguarding and showcasing the mechanism within.

Launched in 1993 and quickly nicknamed “The Beast”, the Royal Oak Offshore was initially seen as a risky move, perhaps even a misstep for Audemars Piguet. Yet its bold differentiation became the foundation of a lasting creative icon.

At just 22, designer Emmanuel Gueit was tasked with reimagining the legendary Royal Oak, and he delivered. The first Offshore was oversized for the 1990s, daring and uncompromising, a reflection of youthful audacity.

Retaining elements such as the octagonal bezel and hand-engraved Petite Tapisserie dial, the Royal Oak Offshore does not abandon tradition, but converses with it in a fresh form. Polished and brushed surfaces alternate, while finely finished edges create dramatic contrast.

The origin story of the Offshore “beast”, once rejected and now iconic, underscores the value of steadfastness in identity.
