The Rado CEO embraces his company’s motto, ‘If we can imagine it, we can make it’

Adrian Bosshard may have only been CEO of Rado since 2020 but he has been with the Swatch Group (Rado's parent company which also owns Omega and Longines, among others) for more than 25 years. Before replacing Matthias Breschan who moved to Longines, Bosshard was the CEO of Certina.

The former professional motorbike racer who still rides a motorbike to work, Bosshard oversees the business and operational strategies at one of the most design-centric watch brands today, fully embracing its motto, “If we can imagine it, we can make it”.

How did Rado venture into the development of high-tech ceramic?

Rado has always been a pioneer and leader in the watch industry, setting the standard and raising the bar. In 1962, we patented the use of hardmetal alloy for watch-case manufacturing; in combination with sapphire crystal, we launched the DiaStar, the first scratch-proof watch. It was this constant search for innovation and new materials that led to the introduction of high-tech ceramic with the launch of the Integral in 1986.

How does Rado ensure the continuation of groundbreaking material innovation?

Research and development are an integral part of the brand’s DNA, all in service of one goal: to surprise watch lovers around the globe with beautiful and unique timepieces.

How does ceramic inspire design?

The material is not the main inspiration when it comes to design. Our vision is to create unique timepieces inspired by our brand heritage. The fact that we can produce them in high-tech ceramic today is the icing on the cake.

Out of all the high-tech ceramic’s unique benefits, which is your favourite and why?

The two advantages that stand out for me are the wearer’s comfort, making it ideal for daily wear, and the fact that it will remain as new as the day you bought it in the years to come.

Comadur produces ceramic for other brands as well. Does it produce a specific type of ceramic for Rado that is not shared with others?

Comadur is a company under the Swatch Group. We all have equal access to the wide range of industrial competencies available within the group.

What are the highlights from this year’s range of new novelties?

The two that have been very well-received are the DiaStar Original with a Ceramos bezel coloured in yellow gold and the relaunch of Anatom after a 40-year absence! I would also say that the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Skeleton and the Centrix Open Heart Super Jubilé are stealing the spotlight.
