Think pearls and you might think classic, formal and stoic—well, you couldn’t be more wrong, they’re one of the biggest jewellery trends of late. The new way to wear them is to infuse modern edge, and a casual touch into the way you style them with your clothes.
There are plenty of trendy designs to choose from these days, beyond the typical round white pearl strand (though it remains a timeless choice thanks to its versatility). Pearls come in myriad shapes, colours and sizes, and also at a wide range of prices. There’s bound to be something to suit every taste and personal style—doesn’t matter if it’s freshwater or saltwater pearls you go for. The former will be better for wearing on a carefree, everyday basis, while the slightly pricier latter, are best reserved for special occasions when you don’t have to worry about accidentally damaging them.

If round pearls are classic and elegant, baroque (irregularly shaped) pearls are their fun and trendy cousins. The multitude of organic forms they come in—from rock-like to teardrop and even misshapen lumps—make them interesting and edgy in their own unconventional fashion. Offering a modern twist on pearl jewellery, consider trying a statement-sized baroque pearl pendant on a simple necklace or a full-strand necklace made of keshi pearls.
