The American luxury house transforms one of its archival motifs with an unprecedented, contemporary touch

In the finery world, the padlock is much more than just hardware. The dainty motif is renowned as a time-honoured symbol of committed and lasting romance, and it has even become a modern-day gimmick across many famous bridges and fences all around the globe.

Since Tiffany & Co first sold functional padlocks in the 1870s, the lock has been a constant and evolving figure in its distinguished DNA. Initially serving the purpose of protecting private information in books or securing dog collars, it didn’t take long for the brand to begin incorporating the padlock into its prized jewellery creations because it’s an emblem like no other.

From the Tiffany Archives, an 1881 Blue Book sales catalogue reveals its design of gold bracelets with padlock clasps and a padlock brooch dating back to 1883. Over a century later, the luxury jeweller reintroduced the element in various pieces, beginning with the “Heart and Key” pendant that debuted in 1990 with a silver heart-shaped padlock, a gold keyhole, and an accompanying gold key.

The past 20 years have further showcased its masterful takes on contemporary and familiar lock-inspired shapes with the Return to Tiffany® and Tiffany HardWear lineups. Today, the motif is brought to full circle in the form of elegant bangles coming from the new Tiffany Lock collection, an everyday accessory with classic, effortless flair.

Distinctly timeless and minimalist with their clear-cut silhouettes, these latest pieces combine form and function to refashion the lock without losing touch of Tiffany & Co’s roots. Each one features an innovative clasp that clicks in place like a real padlock, allowing the bangle to swivel open when gently pulled from either side of the notch.

Variations have been crafted in white, yellow, and rose gold; and there are also options with brilliant-cut diamonds for a dazzling and elevated accent. With this, the Tiffany Lock bangle is a natural finishing touch to any day-to-day ensemble, easily paired and layered across the different fashion styles of the contemporary age.

While it is truly a worthy tribute to a long and colourful heritage, the new collection is more significantly a glimpse into Tiffany & Co’s future as a leading jeweller that champions modernity and innovation in its process of creation. The enduring symbolism and sentimentality of the padlock remain, but it is transformed with a bold, inventive sense that underscores the universal draw of Tiffany’s little blue box.
