Since coming on board as Poh Heng Jewellery’s CEO last year, Eugene Goh has been working to transform the brand while maintaining its unwavering commitment to quality

For most Singaporeans, Poh Heng Jewellery is a household name recognised as a trusted, leading homegrown jeweller specialising in gold. Its reputation was built over more than 70 years of dedication to crafting quality jewellery. In fact, every piece of Poh Heng jewellery bears the lion head logo, which is a quality-control hallmark from the Singapore Assay Office (SAO) for guaranteed gold purity by Singapore’s strict standards.

While Poh Heng has been the go-to jeweller for marking major milestones such as weddings, engagements and newborn baby celebrations, the heritage brand is also evolving with the times and offering contemporary jewellery collections. Eugene Goh, Poh Heng’s CEO, is driving this transformation journey and shares some of his plans for Poh Heng as well as traditional brand values he continues to uphold.

Since taking on the role of CEO at Poh Heng, what are some of the changes or new initiatives that you have implemented? 
 
Eugene Goh (EG): Trust is the cornerstone of Poh Heng’s brand heritage and we will continue to focus on our relationship with the customers as it is the foundation upon which more can be built. We’ve embarked on a transformation journey to stay relevant and accelerate business growth. This is an exciting portfolio that leverages my interest in transformation and development, challenging me and the teams to constantly seek avenues for improvement and better differentiate our brand.

We aim to further elevate the in-store experience by introducing more versatile and modern jewellery pieces that anticipate and satisfy consumer needs for every occasion. We need to strike a balance between breaking the mould while retaining certain key traditions such as the stringent product curation processes yet modernising the designs to be more accessible to a wider audience.  

What sets Poh Heng apart from competing local jewellers? 
 
EG: As Singapore’s leader in gold jewellery for over 70 years, our brand is built upon the business philosophy of integrity and honesty, our gold purity is indisputable, and it has earned the assurance and trust of customers over many generations since 1948. We always believe that machines cannot replace the human touch in creating fine jewellery, and Poh Heng’s artisans attest for their exquisite craftsmanship over the decades. Our Poh Heng Couture collection is a testament of our craftsmanship with luxurious designs that are incredibly bespoke and elegant.

What are the most important values for Poh Heng as a brand? 
 
EG: The brand philosophy of integrity and innovation in everything that Poh Heng does resonates with my personal values. I believe there is no shortcut in life and diligence. Perseverance, the courage to fail, creative thinking and EQ are indispensable in achieving one’s goals in life. At Poh Heng, trust, passion and progressiveness are the main pillars of our brand ethos. We strongly believe in customer centricity and in everything that we do, we endeavour to create a delightful impact on our customers. Passion is the motivation that drives us to stay relevant, evolve and helps us to respond well to customers’ changing needs.

We’ve pushed several boundaries where people and products are concerned. With our brand philosophy of Created for Love, we reaffirm the significance behind our fine jewellery quality and reconnect with our customers who have seen our brand grow through the years. Our jewellery is created for love, created for all. 

How important is it to you to raise awareness of Poh Heng as a local and heritage Singaporean brand?  
 
EG: We are very proud to be homegrown and believe that preserving the values of our heritage would differentiate us well. An immigrant himself, our founder built his home and his legacy in Singapore. Above all, he wanted Poh Heng Jewellery to be trusted as an iconic brand that offered the community exquisite pieces of jewellery that would be treasured by generations to come, and preserving our heritage is an integral part for speaking the language of Singaporeans. We hope to be able to show Singapore that while Poh Heng is rich in heritage, the company is also ever evolving and we will continue to surprise you! 

We are exploring opportunities to partner with more local talents for upcoming campaigns and looking to extend collaborations with renowned brands to add greater value to our customers. From an experiential retail standpoint, we will bring on meaningful engagements and provide on-brand experiences—‘shoppertainment’ to create delightful shopping experiences for customers at both our brick-and-mortar stores and on eCommerce platforms.

What are you currently working on and what else can we expect from Poh Heng? 
 
EG: We have placed a lot of emphasis on human capital development for this quarter. New leaderships are being put in place to further drive innovation in product, services and processes. Poh Heng’s transformation journey will be a continuous and dynamic one. We will keep evolving to stay relevant to customers and pioneer new products and services in time to come. Our vision for Poh Heng is to create an increased demand and appeal for this homegrown brand beyond what we are already known for today—being the trusted icon through generations.  
 
Since last year, we have relaunched our retail boutiques progressively with a trendy new look sporting earthy tones, and a free-flow layout to create a more welcoming and conducive shopping experience. We definitely want to increase the thrill of owning a piece of Poh Heng jewellery and have our customers be intrigued by the sophisticated designs and the brand story we are here to tell.
