The Princess of Wales blends glamour with a good cause in her wardrobe choices at the event in Boston

Kate Middleton knows how to dress for an occasion. The Princess of Wales went stylishly sustainable for Earthshot Prize, a ceremony held in Boston, USA to celebrate environmental heroes. Founded by her husband Prince William and Sir David Attenborough, the initiative offers annual grants to five winners for their contributions to environmentalism so that they can continue making progress in their chosen field.

Matching the event’s theme, Kate dazzled in a neon green Solace London gown rented from HURR, a UK-based rental platform for designerwear, and an heirloom emerald choker that dates back to 1911. The archival piece, which came straight out of the Buckingham Palace vaults, perfectly complemented the princess’ off-the-shoulder gown, and served as the ultimate statement on reusing accessories.

Originally belonging to Middleton’s great-grandmother-in-law, Queen Mary, the diamond and emerald encrusted piece was part of the Delhi Durbar collection. It was gifted to Queen Mary by the Maharani of Patiala on the occasion of King George V’s coronation as the King Emperor of India in Delhi on December 12, 1911. Initially called the Ladies of India necklace, the piece was originally set with 16 cabochon emeralds and was redesigned in the 1920s in art deco style to feature 14 emeralds according to the queen’s preference.

The choker then passed to her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II, who in turn gifted it as a wedding present to Princess Diana who wore it often—she even wore it as a headband once while on a royal visit to Australia in 1985.

Middleton, who’s known to pay sartorial homage to her late mother-in-law, paired the choker with emerald earrings, once again showing us how style and sustainability can go hand in hand.
