The eponymous Chanel stitching proves that strong design motifs can endure through the ages

The 2.55 bag might have made it famous, but Chanel’s instantly recognisable quilted motif was actually introduced in the 1920s, when Gabrielle Chanel incorporated quilted linings, collars and cuffs into her runway looks. The chequerboard print appeared in collections in the 1930s, but it was the 2.55, “It Bag” launched in February 1955, that truly linked the design with highly coveted luxury in the fashion world.

Over the decades, the quilted motif has stitched its way into key collections from the maison, from ready-to-wear to cosmetics, and even watches and jewellery. The Coco Crush fine jewellery collection, launched in 2015, is at once modern and traditional. Chanel lovers can enjoy the interpretation of a classic motif in contemporary jewellery designs, and the collection includes bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings in white, yellow and beige gold. Our favourite pieces, we have to admit, are the rings worn here by Jennie from K-pop group Blackpink.
