Discover the allure of the Cartier panther
In the world of high fashion and jewellery, few emblems evoke elegance and fierceness quite like the Cartier panther. Graceful yet powerful, the panther is the perfect embodiment of Cartier’s inventive spirit.
The panther first appeared at Cartier in 1914, adorning a watch with onyx and diamonds. That same year, it was immortalised in an illustration by artist George Barbier, which ultimately set the stage for a lifelong bond between the animal and the jeweller. However, it was Cartier’s legendary creative director Jeanne Toussaint who gave the panther its modern three-dimensional form in 1933. Thus, La Panthère was born, a striking motif that has since become a symbol of style and elegance at Cartier.

Over the years, the feline has been reinvented by the House numerous times. In the 1940s, Toussaint, along with designer Pierre Lemarchand, who drew inspiration from his visits to Vincennes Zoo, shaped a bold new vision: a predatory, powerful panther atop an impressive emerald cabochon weighing over 116 carats. The brooch would become one of the most iconic pieces of the 20th century, marking the beginning of the emblematic Cartier design.
As a Cartier jewellery, the panther has appeared as a striking solo act or as a dynamic duo, amplifying the force of its visual allure. In a true testament of the maison’s mastery of craftsmanship, its eyes are green emeralds, while diamonds and onyx—and sometimes sapphires—are used to create its luxurious fur.
