A complete rework of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has improved on the previous generation’s car in every aspect

BMW has launched the all-new 4 Series Gran Coupé in Singapore. This is the first time the 4 Series range has been completely refreshed since its unveiling in 2013, and the new second-generation models see improvements over the originals in every aspect. Three variants are available locally, including the performance-oriented flagship: the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé.

Best of both worlds

The styling of new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé combines a four-door design with sporty, dynamically stretched coupé lines. This creates a strong silhouette with a low-slung, muscular stature that’s both bold and confident. In turn, various complementary details have been included, from the prominent BMW kidney grille on the front, to the frameless doors and flush-fitting handles. The overall package is one that conveys power, but also refinement.

Compared to its predecessor, the car is now longer, wider, and taller. It comes with a correspondingly longer wheelbase too. There is thus a generous interior for both driver and passengers, as well as a spacious boot space of 470 litres that can be expanded to 1,290 litres by folding down sections of the rear backrest.

In case you missed it: The New BMW 7 Series M Sport Is a Flagship Hybrid of Power, Comfort and Safety

From its design, it’s clear that the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has been conceived for dynamism, while being careful not to skimp on either comfort or practicality. This translates to the driving experience as well. For a start, there is ample power on tap thanks to the state-of-the-art four- and six-cylinder petrol engines and 48V mild hybrid technology. These, together with the standard eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, give the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé a responsive, sporty handling that’s further augmented by features such as the 50:50 weight distribution and low centre of gravity.

Comfort has not been compromised though, with model-specific geometry, mounting and tuning providing each variant with the perfect balance between responsiveness and ride comfort. The BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and BMW 430i Gran Coupé M Sport Pro also offer customisable settings for a range of driving experiences on the sporty-to-comfortable spectrum.

To top things off, a full suite of driver assistance features provided by the BMW Operating System 7 ensures that operating and interfacing with the vehicle is a cinch. Functions can be accessed in various ways, from traditional buttons to voice commands, while the 12.3-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and separate 10.25-inch control display serve as visual indicators for the driver.

Test driving the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé

For the launch of the all-new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, Tatler Singapore invited Dr Felix Li, founder of Dr Felix Li Medical Aesthetics Clinic, to test drive the flagship BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé. Dr Li’s feedback has unsurprisingly been overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise for the car’s intuitive handling. He noted that this trait did not compromise on the “fun factor” in any way, and opined that such effortless handling would likely be the norm for driving in the future.

Dr Li also shared his experiences and thoughts on the car alongside Daren Ching, Marketing Director of BMW Group Asia, in a fireside chat jointly hosted by BMW Group Asia and Tatler Singapore. The two panellists agreed that the new 4 Series Gran Coupé is a well-engineered cross between a functional, confident sedan for weekdays, and a fun, sporty coupé for weekends. Beyond just insights into the 4 Series Gran Coupé, guests at the event got to experience the car for themselves through test drives, and learn first-hand just how much of a paradigm shift this series’ new generation is.

The all-new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is now available in 3 different variants: the BMW 420i Gran Coupé, the BMW M430i Gran Coupé, and the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé. You may view the cars at both the Performance Motors, BMW and Performance Munich Autos, BMW M showrooms.
