Each season, Weekend Max Mara presents its Signature Collection, designed or inspired by talented creatives around the world. For spring/summer 2022, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson joins its list of past collaborators, including Alek Wek, Ritsue Mishima, and Lucinda Chambers. A pioneer in diversifying the fashion industry and the first black woman to style a cover of Vogue, she is behind some of the fashion magazine's most memorable covers starring American vice president Kamala Harris, Amanda Gorman and supermodel Bella Hadid

Known for creating energetic looks with bright colours and interesting silhouettes, Karefa-Johnson's capsule collection taps into the origin of this unique aesthetic: her family. Digging through old family photo albums, she draws inspiration from how her closest relatives—grandparents, aunts, uncle and siblings—dressed in their youth.

Photographed by supermodel Gigi Hadid, the collection is a visual exploration of cross-generational style. Colourful geometric prints, alluding to English painter Bridget Riley's colourful op art paintings from the sixties, feature liberally on breezy dresses and top-and-skirt combos made from disco-era silks. There are also nods to the groovy seventies with wooden clogs, washed denim baker boy hats and the iconic Pasticcino Bag reimagined in nostalgic macramè.
