Each season, Weekend Max Mara presents its Signature Collection, designed or inspired by talented creatives around the world. For spring/summer 2022, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson joins its list of past collaborators, including Alek Wek, Ritsue Mishima, and Lucinda Chambers. A pioneer in diversifying the fashion industry and the first black woman to style a cover of Vogue, she is behind some of the fashion magazine's most memorable covers starring American vice president Kamala Harris, Amanda Gorman and supermodel Bella Hadid.
Known for creating energetic looks with bright colours and interesting silhouettes, Karefa-Johnson's capsule collection taps into the origin of this unique aesthetic: her family. Digging through old family photo albums, she draws inspiration from how her closest relatives—grandparents, aunts, uncle and siblings—dressed in their youth.
