This limited-edition XYZ collection was made for the benefit of young victims of sexual abuse

Yong Davalos, fashion artist and CEO of Yong Studio, partners with artist and philanthropist Melissa Yeung-Yap to create a limited-edition collection of art, scarves, dresses, and more. This XYZ collaboration was born to raise awareness and contribute donations for the projects of Zonta Club of Makati and Environ through the fund-raising enterprise Las FilipinaZ Inc. All of the profits from the limited-edition collection will go to Marillac Hills Psychological Center for Sexually Abused Girls and Children.

Seeing her style as modern contemporary art mixed with indigenous cultural elements, Yeung-Yap holds the significance of Filipino culture in high regard and wishes for its preservation and support. She handpicked the best abstract patterns from her current artworks that perfectly represent her commitment to empowering women and supporting communities of Filipino fabric weavers. Davalos then brought them to life with seasonally-appropriate loungewear flattering to the women who wear them.

‘‘This particular pattern [from the collection] was something I did spontaneously. For me, art-making is a soulful process so I had to mindfully be in tune with my natural movement,’’ Yeung-Yap says.

The intricately patterned weaves such as Yakan and Abel have been seamlessly integrated into the clothing with a firm focus on respect for the traditions and the communities that make them.

‘‘Sexual harassment among women and children is something that breaks my heart. Being part of this XYZ collab between Zonta and Yong Studio has inspired me to contribute more towards this cause,’’ Yeung-Yap shares. ‘‘I hope that the women would also feel encouraged, knowing that so many people care about them. So when I found out that the collaboration was for abused women, I said, ‘Take it, use my art.’ I also didn’t know who the designer was, so when I saw Yong, it was like love at first sight.’’

The socially-conscious XYZ line is Yong Studio's masterwork that fully represents their efforts to remain sustainable, relevant, and growth-centred for many women.

‘‘This collaboration means so much to me as this is the first for XYZ, a line we have created to create meaningful fashion pieces where part of the proceeds are given back to a cause. It is also very special as this is the first time we have explored digital printing for Yong Studio,’’ says Davalos.
