Fashion designer Rajo Laurel takes inspiration from the fluidity of water

The enigmatic, fashion powerhouse that is Rajo Laurel released his 2021 holiday collection through a vibrant Zoom runway show in front of dear friends, the press, and avid fans.

Entitled Monomorph, Laurel’s collection is all about versatility, and is inspired by the fluidity of water. He explains that it “celebrates singular plurality - the variability and oneness of human states in being and becoming”.

The designer was fascinated by water and how it exudes power and dynamism. Water in all its different states - liquid, frozen, and gas - had his creative juices flowing. Throughout the collection, you will notice a variety of lines, structure and form, the juxtaposition of soft and hard, as well as the fluidity and versatility of garment usability.

Laurel, who spends a wealth of time in Japan, was also inspired by the art of calligraphy which helped further develop the intricacies of his designs and create a beautiful story of line.

He explains that his House of Laurel, his demi-couture line on the other hand explores “the nuances of biomorphic sculptures akin to the works of Noguchi - their sensuous yet contemplative curves, their subtle yet striking shape, simultaneously solid and fluid’.

At the core, his collections both demi-couture and ready-to-wear aim to bring customers contemporary, thoughtful fashion that can last a lifetime. For more information, visit rajolaurel.com
