Chinese Valentine’s Day falls on August 4 this year—take a look at the best gifts for loved ones in celebration of the festival

Chinese legend has it that on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month every year, a cowherd and a weaver girl—a pair of star-crossed lovers—meet across the Milky Way. This enduring romantic folktale has come to represent an auspicious day to celebrate romance and love, and is one of the most significant festivals in Chinese culture. It is known variously as the Qixi Festival (七夕節), the Double Seventh Festival, or Chinese Valentine’s Day.

In 2022, the festival falls on August 4. It’s a popular time for presenting loved ones with thoughtful gifts, and here, we’ve rounded up our favourite creations to choose from.

1. Gucci

Part of Alexander McQueen’s Qixi Festival collection, this necklace features a pendant made of two components, which together form the shape of a heart. Half of it is antique gold while the other is made of silver metal. The two parts, linked magnetically, can be worn as a set, or as separate accessories.

Hogan has given its H580 men’s leather sneakers a cutesy spin for the Qixi Festival. These special edition kicks feature hearts and laces that read “I heart you”.

4. La Perla

La Perla’s Amore Florale collection, launched in celebration of the Qixi Festival, features a nightdress inspired by the lychee, which has long been a symbol of romance and beauty in Chinese culture. The nightdress features illustrations of the fruit—seen in a heart shape—as well as of floral blossoms.

5. Valentino

Valentino has released a special edition of the Mini Locò bag, a cult favourite, as part of the brand’s All Around Love collection. It features a red heart atop the retro-inspired V logo in gold hardware.

6. Loewe

This piece, dubbed the Kunoji knot stone and available at Loewe, is created by Japanese brand Shizu Designs, which specialises in transforming rocks into art. The stone features an ornamental knot made of calfskin and is wrapped using Japanese ikebana basket weaving skills, which are traditionally applied to the creation of woven bamboo containers. The piece would make for an ideal gift for fans of intricate decor items.

7. Lancôme

Lancôme has released a special edition of its L’Absolu Rouge range of lipsticks. In a nod to the tale behind the Qixi Festival, the collection is named Love on the Milky Way. The design of the lipstick tubes is inspired by the Parisian night sky. Three colours are offered: the French Touch is red with a hint of orange; the French Rendez-vous is a deep red; while the French Teal features a rosy, milky tea colour.
