Balmain's Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing, celebrates a decade of artistry and style through a capsule collection featuring his favourite looks

Rather candidly, Olivier Rousteing describes his latest capsule collection with Balmain as his most personal one to date. Since helming the brand at the age of 25, Rousteing has been at the forefront of high fashion. Now, after ten years as the Creative Director of the maison, Rousteing has unveiled a new collection featuring some of his favourite looks. "[Being the Creative Director for Balmain] has been a responsibility that has controlled every moment of my life for the past decade—but, obviously, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. We’ve decided to celebrate those ten years of nonstop challenges, creations and changes with a re-edition of a handful of my favourite looks," said the designer in his official press release.

Taking on the rebellious and edgy spirit that Balmain and its army are best known for, Rousteing developed a collection that features both contemporary styles and elements from Rousteing's own personal life. Just a year ago, Rousteing suffered an accident which gave him incredibly painful burns. At the time, he began spending more and more time in hospital rooms, with bandages and gauze wraps. Noticeably, the current collection features elements of a similar kind. "I found myself translating those months of doctors and physical therapy into today’s many bands, weaves and dangling straps," commented Rousteing. "By embracing that previous pain and celebrating the power of healing, somehow I’ve been able to translate them into beautiful components of my designs."

Y2K is also another inspiration that Rousteing has acknowledged for his decade-anniversary collection. "In particular, this runway riffs on the many powerful female singers of that period, whose beauty and talent were only enhanced by their audaciousness," he added. To complement this boldness, Rousteing has also impressed the collection with plenty of innovation such as sharp cuts, precise tailoring, and impressive artisanship. Pieces from the line will feature awesome designs that include metal weaving, ruching, and quilted feathers.

Tying it all together is Rousteing's love for music and how he has incorporated it into projects past and present—including this collection. "During my ten years at the house, my team and I have seamlessly woven music and fashion together, season after season. Today’s second Balmain Festival builds upon that distinctive house DNA, with some of my favourite performers joining our models on this special concert-meets-runway stage," Rousteing explained. Though the Balmain Festival had to be cancelled in 2020, it has returned this 2022 to benefit the Global Fund in their fight against both AIDS and COVID-19. "When the door opened for me in 2011, I was not the most expected candidate for a Creative Director. Since then, I have been determined to use this opportunity and position to keep pushing for further change. Over the next ten years, I pledge to continue to push for more inclusion, more democracy and more openness."
