The excitement for the Met Gala has been building since 2019, when Anna Wintour announced the theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. It was looking like trouble when the Met Gala was postponed earlier this year, due to the pandemic. Fortunately, the Met Gala is back! And everyone on the internet has collectively rolled up their sleeves to provide live commentary on the event.

Kim Kardashian’s all-black outfit

Rihanna’s ‘omelette dress’ from the 2017 Met Gala might have finally met its match with Kim Kardashian’s all-black Balenciaga outfit and face covering by creative director Demna Gvasalia. She has already been compared to a women’s bathroom sign, xenomorph from the Alien franchise, as well as a video game character that has yet to be unlocked.

Kardashian’s recent decisions to adhere to her estranged husband, Kanye West's new aesthetic, especially after the bizarre wedding scene at the rapper's recent album release concert, fuels rumours that the power couple may be putting their billion-dollar divorce aside and reconciling. “What clause in the divorce agreement didn’t help her get out of doing this?” asked Twitter user, Alyssa Vingan.

Rihanna arriving fashionably late

Rihanna is arguably one of the biggest stars at the Met Gala, with fellow celebrities gushing about their excitement to see her at the event and attend her after-party, which she announced on Instagram stories, in true Rihanna fashion. Making an entrance, she arrived with her beau, A$AP Rocky wearing a voluminous couture outfit by Balenciaga and stunning jewellery by Bulgari

However, fans have also voiced their outrage that there is not a second outfit under the black ensemble—a trend that cemented itself at the camp edition of the Met Gala.

Iman

The Met Gala is by no means a competition, but everyone has agreed that Iman is the winner. She is wearing Harris Reed, a young designer who has been making a name for herself in the last few months. In fact, up and coming designers are having a moment at the Met Gala this year, with Formula One champion, Lewis Hamilton, buying a table and inviting young black designers to the exclusive event.

Cosplay at the Met

Grimes’s look was inspired by her love for Dune, the American sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert with an upcoming movie adaptation by Denis Villeneuve. She wears a custom Iris van Herpen ‘Bene Gesserit’ gown, which took 900 hours to create. “It’s not a prop sword, I tried to pick it up and this is not really a one-handed situation. The sword is a permanent piece of the Met’s collection and cast from a Colt AR-15A3,” she says in an interview with Vogue
