The dress, which the Princess of Wales wore to Trooping the Colour, was made by Singaporean fashion designer Andrew Gn
Kate Middleton’s style choices have been known to make headlines, but her outfit for the 2023 Trooping the Colour celebrations made history as well: the princess wore a custom dress by fashion designer Andrew Gn.
The midi-length dress, which was perfectly tailored to Middleton’s svelte figure, came in emerald green—a symbolic choice that nodded to her new role as the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards—and featured jewelled embellishments. The latter, which were in deep blue hue that matched Middleton’s sapphire jewellery, are a signature element of Gn’s designs. There was also a custom Andrew Gn embellishment on the matching hat that Middleton wore, which was created by British milliner Philip Treacy.

Trooping the Colour marked the first time that Middleton has championed a Singaporean fashion designer at a public event. Typically, the Princess of Wales prefers to show her support for British fashion brands at these outings (Alexander McQueen and Emilia Wickstead are some of her go-to labels), which made her choice to wear Andrew Gn all the more remarkable.
But Gn, who was the cover star of Tatler Singapore’s May 2023 issue, is no stranger to dressing princesses himself: Queen Rania and Princess Mary of Denmark are some of his loyal, royal fans. That much is highlighted at his ongoing retrospective exhibition, Andrew Gn: Fashioning Singapore and the World, at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) in Singapore, where Middleton’s dress is now on display.
“We added this dress to the ongoing exhibition to immortalise and pay tribute to this historic fashion moment—for the princess, Andrew Gn, and Singapore,” said Jackie Yoong, senior curator of fashion and Textiles at ACM. Yoong, who curated Gn’s retrospective at the museum, also added that the dress’s significance lay in the fact that Middleton wore it to her first Trooping the Colour parade since being christened as Princess of Wales last year.
“It is a huge honour for a Singaporean designer and speaks to his significance on the global stage—a major focus of the exhibition,” said Yoong. “Collecting this dress and displaying it here for our visitors to admire reinforces our ongoing commitment to casting a spotlight on Singapore’s contemporary fashion.”

Beyond Middleton’s dress, there are plenty of fashion treasures to discover at ACM’s Andrew Gn retrospective. Featuring over 100 archival designs donated by Gn, it ACM’s largest ever exhibition dedicated to a Singaporean designer. It offers a close-up look at Gn’s standout creations over the course of his 28-year career as a fashion designer based in Paris. The exhibition also explores his roots in Asia and his Western influences, and how his designs have won over women around the world, including celebrities, royals, and now, Princess Kate Middleton.
