Get all the details of the Princess of Wales’ repeated red carpet outfit from 2019
It’s no royal secret that Kate Middleton is a serial outfit repeater. Over the years, the eco-minded Princess of Wales has recycled her designer dresses and suits for her public appearances, highlighting the timelessness of each piece. Her latest sustainable style statement came at the Bafta Awards 2023 red carpet, featuring a certain Alexander McQueen dress.
Cut from white silk chiffon, the one-shoulder gown features Grecian drapes that transformed Middleton into an ethereal vision as she walked beside her husband, Prince William. If that vision seemed familiar, that’s because the princess had previously worn that same dress to the Baftas in 2019.

Back then, the dress boasted an air of flamboyance through floral embellishments upon the shoulder. The princess had accessorised with a white clutch and silver heels, creating an outfit that would grace many a bridal Pinterest moodboard.
This time around, however, Middleton wore her Alexander McQueen gown in a whole new way. Gone are the floral embellishments. The princess instead updated her dress with a piece of flowing fabric that was pinned upon the shoulder. Another marked difference: the black velvet gloves, which contrasted her dress with a dramatic flair.
And if that wasn’t enough for a night out to celebrate movie stars, Middleton also glammed up with gold sequin Aquazzura Fenix pumps and oversized, cascading floral earrings from Zara—yes, you read that right.

Middleton joins a cast of other stylish famous figures who have taken to recycling their outfits, including Cate Blanchett, Jane Fonda and Joaquin Phoenix. The British royal’s elegant Baftas ensemble reminds us that there are plenty of ways to breathe new life into our favourite garments. It’s easy enough if one follows the late British designer Vivienne Westwood’s motto: “Buy less, choose well, make it last.”
