Feeling a bit stuck about what to dress up as for Halloween? Let us show you how to take inspiration from your zodiac sign and some classic film characters

The thrill of Halloween is being able to transform into someone completely different for the night no matter how old you are, and bonus points if it causes a fright. But if you feel like you’ve already done every costume in the past and are looking for a more clever inspiration that speaks to who you are, why not try matching your outfit to a fictional character who embodies your zodiac sign?

To get you started, here are some iconic characters from films—both villains and anti-heroes—who would make for one hell of a costume for Halloween. Best of all? Every one of them can be created fairly easily, and are great last-minute ideas.

1. Aries: Catwoman

Whether she’s a villain or anti-hero, Catwoman—in all versions of the Batman movies, but especially Michelle Pfieffer’s portrayal in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (1992)—definitely comes across as a hot-headed but fabulous Aries.

Similarly to the intensity and lack of filter of this sign, she does what she wants, when she wants and for who she wants, and without forgoing her signature style. And always with a little bit of chaos; just for kicks.

2. Taurus: Jennifer Check

Jennifer Check, the unbothered cheerleader-turned-demon played by Megan Fox in the dark comedy Jennifer’s Body (2009), screams a level-headed and fun-loving Taurus.

Despite her fate, she’s still easygoing and one who enjoys the finer things in life, which is so Taurus. For Check, wearing cute outfits, hanging out with her bestie and feasting on highschool boys are all a good time.

3. Gemini: Willy Wonka

There’s a stark juxtaposition that exists in both the Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp versions of Willy Wonka. Despite being a seemingly friendly character, there is something unnerving about him as he goes from zany and delightful to almost aggressive and menacing.

It’ll be interesting to see if this duality will also be in Timotheé Chalamet’s portrayal of the younger version of the chocolatier  in the upcoming movie, Wonka—but either way, what’s more Gemini than duality?

4. Cancer: Casper the Friendly Ghost

Casper the Friendly Ghost wouldn’t hurt a fly, and neither would an average Cancer, who tend to be tender, emotional and much more likely to choose a cuddle over a confrontation.

Both Cancers and Casper have the tendency to forgive, but there is still a streak of mischief that would be so fun to embody on Halloween night.

5. Leo: Pearl

One definitely sees a spotlight-loving Leo in Pearl, the titular character in Ti West’s 2022 film of the same name. On a quest to escape the boredom of domestic farm life, Pearl seeks grandeur and glamour on the big stage, but are met with those who don’t see her talent the same way she does.

Leos possess a bold personality and have plenty of creativity, so we’re sure a Pearl would not be a challenge for them.

6. Virgo: Patrick Bateman

Christian Bale portrays Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000) as a meticulous, stylish and savvy gentleman despite the fact he’s a completely unhinged axe-murdering yuppie with strong Virgo tendencies.

Before you cut out the Virgos in your life, let us explain: Patrick possesses many key stereotypes of this earth sign. For example, he has a methodical approach to everything in his life—from his morning skincare and exercise routine to his outfit combinations and impeccable memory of musical history—it’s just that ... he also uses this approach to commit murder. Still, this would be a fun costume for a Virgo this Halloween!

7. Libra: Grace Le Domas

One of the most recent and memorable “final girls” (female characters who survive until the end of a film) of the thriller genre is Grace Le Domas from Ready or Not (2019). She is a combination of an endearing affable nature and kick-ass. And just like a Libra, she seeks the best in others and tends to avoid conflict.

Extra points for if you evolve your Grace costume the way the character’s evolve throughout the film as she survives one death trap after another. (Read: rips and lots of fake blood.)

8. Scorpio: Morticia Addams

Halloween marks the beginning of Scorpio season, and for that reason, they are often described as mysterious, passionate and dark; but also with an undercurrent of sharp humour and style to boot.

All of which is embodied in Morticia Addams—specifically Angelica Houston’s portrayal in both The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993). And, honestly, is there a more classy and fool-proof costume that never goes out of style?

9. Sagittarius: Ken

Ken in recent hit Barbie (2023) is such a Sagittarius. You can see it in his curiosity for newness and desire for self-betterment. And in the mayhem that follows when the Kens turn on each other, which comes from reacting based purely on emotions—a classic Sagittarius trait.

Have fun with bright colours and bombastic outfits, or faux fur and horse motifs.

10. Capricorn: Esther/Leena Klammer

Capricorns are highly motivated individuals who let little get in the way of their success. Add persistent and sensitive to the mix, and you have Esther from The Orphan (2009), a 33-year-old runaway looking for a husband by whatever means necessary who disguises herself as a nine-year-old child seeking a loving family.

The costume would be pretty simple, but also impactful, and you better master her slightly deranged stare.

11. Aquarius: Jigsaw/Billy the Puppet

Jigsaw is the ultimate Aquarius: innovative, eccentric and a free-thinker. Sure, he’s got a thing for inflicting suffering on seemingly random individuals, but ... his intentions are in the right place? No?

Although seen as a bit of an outcast, Aquarians are actually progressive individuals and humanitarians at their core. Bonus: if you create a killer mask for this costume, you can save it for scaring house guests later on.

12. Pisces: Maleficent

Like a Pisces, Maleficent (depicted by Angelina Jolie in the eponymous 2014 film) is just deeply misunderstood. And while often seen as strong, they both have a side to them that is dreamy and tender, and really they are just all heart.

The best thing about this costume is that it’s the perfect blend between comfort and glam: the make-up has to be snatched, but you can afford to go more flowy with the outfit.
