Learn the difference between business attire, cocktail, black tie and more dress codes before your next big event

Is smart casual the same as business casual? Is wearing one's national costume suitable for a black tie event?

Keeping up with the definition of various dress codes for social functions can be a confusing affair, especially given how quickly fashion trends evolve over time. For instance, did you know that the formal and sophisticated dark suit today was once considered sloppy and unrefined in comparison to the formal frock coats that upper class English men were expected to wear at balls and dinner parties?

When in doubt, keep in mind what the following dress codes for men and women mean to avoid under-dressing at your next function.

White Tie

Rarely used in modern times (exceptions being the Met Gala or Buckingham Palace state dinners), events with a white tie dress code will typically require men to don a black tailcoat and trousers, white shirt with a wing collar, a vest and a white bowtie, complemented with a pair of crisp white gloves and black dress shoes. Ladies should wear a full-length gown and long white gloves, with their hair up.

Galas, society balls, corporate annual dinners, awards ceremonies and even certain wedding receptions may call for a black tie outfit. Similar to white tie, women are expected to use floor-length formal gowns (sans the white gloves), along with equally stunning bling and accessories to complete the look. For men, a tuxedo with a black bow tie suffices.

In some cases, wearing formal national dress—baju kurung or baju Melayu with songket or a saree—may be suitable for a black tie event. When in doubt, consult with the host or event organiser first. Savile Row Academy founder Andrew Ramroop has even commented that the Indian saree should be considered formalwear.

The keyword here is semi-formal. While some definitions of this dress code differ, it's generally understood that men should wear a suit with a tie being optional. For women, cocktail dresses with a hemline above the knee are suitable, paired with heels. For a daytime affair, ladies may even opt for a pantsuit or a blouse and skirt of silk or satin.

Similar to a lounge suit dress code, business attire requires men to wear a dark suit (navy, gray or brown colours) with a conservative tie that reaches the bottom of the belt.

For women, a business dress or suit with a pair of closed-toe heels will be fine.

Note that business casual is different from smart casual, so leave the denims and shorts at home. For men, business casual translates to a blazer or sports coat and a solid colour collared shirt or dressed up T-shirt with dark trousers or khakis. A blouse with a skirt or pair of slacks is fine for women.

The smart casual dress code for men doesn't require a tie. Typically, denim, suit pants or chinos with a collared shirt will do the trick for the guys. Ladies can opt for a dress, a jumpsuit and a T-shirt with a blazer. Both heels or flats are acceptable for ladies in this case.

A good rule of thumb: If you're worried about under-dressing or even over-dressing, check with the host.
