Chanel picks the ultimate summer destination to host its first Cruise fashion show with an audience since 2019
Chanel is set to inspire our wanderlust yet again with its Cruise 2023 fashion show, taking place at the glitzy and glamorous city of Monaco.
The French luxury fashion brand has an intimate history with the state that sits on the French Riviera. For one, Karl Lagerfeld presented Chanel’s Métiers d'Art collection there in 2006, all the better to catch up with his friend, Princess Caroline of Monaco. Lagerfeld also owned La Vigie, a villa in the nearby town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, which is also home to Coco Chanel’s La Pausa villa.
For Chanel’s upcoming fashion show, designer Virginie Viard is celebrating the fashion house’s connection with Charlotte Casiraghi, who is Princess Caroline’s daughter, as well as the granddaughter of the former Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly.
You may recognise Casiraghi from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2021 campaign, which she starred in and which was set in—where else?—Monaco. Casiraghi was already very much a Chanel muse before that, though. In 2019, she held her wedding reception at La Vigie, and wore a Chanel couture wedding gown designed by Lagerfeld.

Perhaps nothing illustrates Chanel’s ties to Monaco better than the trailer for its Cruise 2023 collection, shot by Sofia Coppola and Roman Coppola. The collage-style clip shows images and videos from the Chanel archives taking around the city-state, including Grace Kelly wearing a Chanel tweed suit, Princess Caroline being photographed on The Rock of Monaco, and shots of Lagerfeld’s grand La Vigie villa.
The video also reveals the exact location of Chanel’s fashion show: Monte-Carlo Beach, the luxurious hotel at the heart of Monaco. There, we are offered glimpses of the beach-ready collection via models Blesnya Minher, HyunJi Shin, Mariam de Vinzelle, Vivienne Rohner, as well as Chanel ambassador Lyna Khoudri.
