From the romantic allure of its womenswear to the artisanal craftsmanship of its Purple Label suits, Ralph Lauren’s spring-summer 2024 collections prove that good American design embodies timeless elegance

Last September, Ralph Lauren made a highly anticipated return to New York Fashion Week after four years, presenting its Spring/Summer 2024 womenswear collection at a show staged in an empty warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard—once a pivotal naval shipping facility—that had been transformed into an artistically eclectic loft, blending organic textures such as reclaimed wood and fine muslin with the glimmer of chandeliers and draped canvases.

Celebrating classic American style infused with expressive individuality, the collection pays homage to the freedom of personal style, epitomising the spirit of a woman who is both timeless and modern, bold yet romantic, all while staying true to herself.

This is brought to the fore with the various looks at the show, which presented combinations one would not necessarily expect. Classic spring elements, for instance, seen in the palette of blue and white as well as the floral patterns and abstract prints that adorn the flowy maxi dresses and chic separates, are matched with denim—the most American of fabrics which gets a glam makeover with intricate embroidery and ornate embellishments such as sequins, beads and even feathers.

Classic suits are refreshed with loose, wide‑legged trousers or lavish beading; and a vibrant scarf was even worn with a pinstripe suit for a bold play with patterns. While the combination of casual and luxury is seen throughout the show, it was even more apparent in the array of black and gold looks, ranging from leather jackets paired with sheer skirts and tops, to gold trousers and blazers.

Highlights included a gold polo shirt—a nod to the Ralph Lauren icon—matched with a floor-sweeping black tulle skirt, and fringed shawls draped over all-black ensembles.

The striking finale featured a bold interplay of textures, jewel tones, and statement jewellery, such as long layered beaded necklaces and chandelier earrings, encapsulating the collection’s spirit of marrying romance with vibrant sophistication and authenticity. The show culminated in two stunning gold looks: a leather macramé gown detailed with intricate woven patterns and gold fringe, crafted by 15 embroiderers over 800 hours, and a gold lamé gown worn by supermodel Christy Turlington—another American legend whose star still shines bright.

Accessories also played a big part in the collection. They include the new Ralph Lauren RL 888 bag, which opened the show. Named after the women’s flagship boutique on 888 Madison Avenue in New York City, the bag’s distinct angles and exaggerated curves are crafted from exotic skins by artisans in Florence, and adorned with the sleek “RL” logo.

Meanwhile, the spirit of timeless glamour also defined the Ralph Lauren Purple Label Spring/Summer 2024 collection, which captivated audiences at its Milan showroom, with its refined tailoring seen in expertly constructed suits and sophisticated separates. Dubbed Dolce Vita, or “the good life” in Italian, the collection draws its inspiration from the romance of a sun-drenched holiday on the Amalfi Coast and epitomises the essence of the good life through its dedication to European craftsmanship.

Even so, the Purple Label’s distinct blend of high artisanship and classic American design remains in the tactile richness of the fabrics, such as suede and knit, made seasonally appropriate with relaxed fits and the house’s iconic preppy styles. The eveningwear stood out with sharply tailored tuxedo suits and shawl-collared jackets, marked by clean lines and neon hues inspired by the flora and fauna of the Canary Islands. Casual offerings included airy linen shirts, suede overshirts, and swimwear in bright shades, worn with espadrilles in solid colours and tropical motifs.

The collection’s style of layering facilitates seamless transitions between seasons, as showcased by its pairings of pullovers with floral‑printed shorts or leather sandals with a hand-tailored herringbone jacket. All of these elements converge to honour the good American design and timeless elegance that remains a signature of Ralph Lauren.
