It’s important to know the brand behind the items you use. This way, every purchase is more consequential and worth the buck. “As a consumer, we have to have that discipline when we shop,” relates Trillo during the talk. “It’s about a relationship [with your products].” Nowadays, with endless sales and discounts - especially with online shopping - it can be very tempting to hoard or mindlessly add-to-cart. But Trillo was quick to share that we can reframe the way we shop, a thought equally echoed by Quiñones. “Sustainability is to be mindful of all the small decisions and choices you make every day,” the fashion stylist shared. “These choices can be better for you, the people around you, or the planet.”

In the first month of the lockdowns, I made an effort to always wear a fragrance – it made me feel like I was going about my day like before. It made me feel happier; almost like a form of escape.

Titled ‘Flutter for Change’, the talk was also initiated in support of the Clean Beauty Collective’s campaign for EarthDay.org and its efforts to preserve the planet’s ecosystem and its butterflies. In the middle of the campaign is fragrance brand Clean Reserve which has long been a trailblazer with regards to sustainable scents. When asked how fragrance fits into one’s lifestyle, Atilano said it depends on the mood and moment, “if it’s daytime, I would choose a lighter, fresher perfume; if I feel down, I like floral and sweet scents because it brings me back to my childhood - going to the garden, being surrounded by butterflies and bees.”

Scents no doubt bring us back to fond memories as Atilano related and when it comes to fragrance, they can also give one a boost of self-esteem and confidence. “I choose what [perfume] to wear based on my mood,” Trillo added. “I have a scent that I wear every day, or when attending meetings, one for events, or even for family gatherings and outdoors . . . but during the pandemic, fragrances became more important.  People would use scent to travel to another place and remember [special moments].”

Quińones agreed, “in the first month of the lockdowns, I made an effort to always wear a fragrance – it made me feel like I was going about my day like before. It made me feel happier; almost like a form of escape.”

While perfume choices in the market are abundant, those looking to maintain or strengthen a sustainable lifestyle will be happy to know that Clean Reserve takes all this into consideration. Whether it’s transporting its wearer to a better mindset, a nostalgic moment, or an earth-friendly journey—the beauty brand is dedicated to enriching one’s relationship with scents.
