Homegrown beauty brand Porcelain’s co-founder Pauline Ng does not care for skincare trends but has tried everything from lasers to Botox so as to provide better advice to her clients. We speak to the dedicated entrepreneur to find out more about her beauty rituals

For a tiny island like Singapore, we have a lot to be proud of when it comes to our local beauty scene. Several homegrown brands have made a name for themselves in the competitive industry and are constantly trying to innovate in order to stay on top of their game.

One of these brands is Porcelain, the brainchild of mother-and-daughter pair, Jenny Teng and Pauline Ng. Teng is the director aesthetician of Porcelain, The Face Spa and Porcelain Aesthetics, and Porcelain Signatures. In 2009, encouraged by her daughter as well as her loyal clientele who had stayed with her, she launched her own facial salon, Porcelain, The Face Spa. Combining her penchant for business management and love for biology, Ng became the sharp business mind her mother needed.

The savvy managing director of Porcelain said she was a “tomboy” who never paid much attention to skincare—until she co-created the homegrown brand with her mother. Today, she has an impressive skincare routine that she does not shy away from and has even tried out various aesthetic treatments to enhance the way her skin looks. And her complexion says it all.

Read all the details about her day-to-day beauty rituals and top skincare products below.

How long do you typically spend on your skincare routine?

Though it may seem like I use quite a lot of products in my skincare routine, it takes no more than five minutes in the morning, including sunscreen and drawing my brows. As Porcelain products can be mixed and matched, I combine different products together to shorten the routine and get different results depending on my skin condition.

What is your skincare routine like for the day?

I have naturally dry, sensitive skin, so the products address these skin concerns. The first and most important step to every routine is the cleanse. In the morning, I prefer to start my days with a deeply hydrating Pre-Cleansing Milk which leaves my skin feeling very soft and moisturised. For toning, I use the Deep Hydrating Lotion followed by the pH Balancing Essence and then HA+ Hydrating Serum.

For someone with sensitive and dry skin, I rely a lot on my HA+ Hydrating Serum. Its dual chained Hyaluronic Acid and four unique complexes help to strengthen sensitive skin and rehydrate it. It's followed by a liberal layer of our Deep Recovery Gel mixed with the Botanical Sensitive Care Toner and massaged in with a lifting motion from neck to face. I then use the RevitalEyes Concentrate to depuff my eye area and apply the Hydraclear Gel on my T-Zone (for all-day sebum control) and use it as a spot blemish treatment if I am having breakouts. Lastly, I finish it off with our Skin Perfecting Moisturiser which contains SPF 30 to protect my skin and the UKYO by Porcelain hydrating skin powder.

What is your skincare routine for the night?

Always double cleanse. I start with Porcelain’s Pre-Cleansing Milk followed by Hydro Cleanser or Deep Cleansing Gel depending on how my skin is feeling. I will then tone with a cotton pad, mixing Glycolic Toner and Deep Hydrating Lotion to clear my pores, reduce skin pigmentation or uneven skin tone and improve cell renewal. This is followed by the HA+ Hydrating Serum. Similar to my day routine, I apply a liberal layer of our Deep Recovery Gel, or Botanical Soothing Gel mixed with the Botanical Sensitive Care Toner. I follow with the RevitalEyes Concentrate as it soothes tired eyes and prevents fine lines. It also helps me look less tired in the morning. To finish, I apply our Hydraclear Gel to my T-zone. Once a week, or whenever my skin is feeling stressed, I would do a mini facial using the Natural Skin Refiner that uses enzymes to remove dead skin cells followed by the Hydrocare Bio-Cellulose Mask.

What was the last skincare product that you bought?

I didn't buy it but Nic, a dear friend, passed me his new product from PSA Skin to try out.

Are there any new skincare trends that you’re excited to try?

I am not usually a trend person as I study the technology of the ingredients and how their biomedical properties and benefits. I am looking into biotechnological ingredients now and have already incorporated some of that into our products.

When did you start paying extra attention to your skin?

When I started Porcelain. I was quite the tomboy and never paid much attention to skincare. I am grateful I did start when I was 23 because it would be painful to reverse ageing.

What’s one skincare must-have you’ve “influenced” others to purchase?

HA+ Hydrating Serum. It is my must-have.

What’s a skincare product you can’t live without?

HA+ Hydrating Serum too. And the Skin Perfecting Tinted Moisturizer—I truly enjoy the lightweight texture of this sunscreen.

What’s the most important skincare step to you?

Cleansing has always been a vital step for me, especially double cleansing at night. Even though you may not be wearing any makeup, a good double cleanse can determine the health of your skin and the effectiveness of your routine. It’s also vital to look for a cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural moisture as well!

Where and what is your go-to facial?

When I have a bit of spare time, I always book an appointment at our Porcelain spas for the Proionic Facial and IllumiZap or CryoZap.

Is skincare the new self-care? What are your thoughts on this?

As I thought about this, it brought me back in time when I was a little girl playing in my mum's beauty salon. She was teaching the ladies how to do home-care and the terms she used in mandarin was to "pamper yourself". The skincare routine, be it at home or in the hands of a trained professional, is a huge form of self-care, the act of pampering yourself.

It helps us slow down and focus on the moment, being present with ourselves. It's also our truest belief that confidence can be built with good skin and as we embrace ourselves in our own skin, we feel a bit better about ourselves. That was the reason for our brand ethos that there's perfection is in our imperfections.

What is one piece of skincare advice that you live by?

Go foundation-free and allow your skin to breathe—less is more.

Exfoliate and mask at home at least once a week if you don't have time for a facial. Don't overdo it with the lasers and peels, they are great but if over-done can cause skin sensitivity.

What is your beauty tool of choice?

Currently, the 2-in-1 RevitalEyes Concentrate with microfrequency and microcurrent. It is so easy to use. Simplicity is key!

What is the most unique beauty treatment you’ve tried overseas?

It wasn't a facial but a full body massage done by two masseurs in China; I don't know what skills [that took] but after they did the drainage massage on my thighs and legs (I haven't found anyone that uses this technique in Singapore.)—I felt like I was walking on clouds.

Have you tried out aesthetic treatments? Why or why not?

Yes, I have tried lasers, peels, Thermage, Botox and fillers (the latter two only once each). I wanted to know what is on the market, what's all the rage, and figure out how we can advise clients to pair it with our treatments. I also wanted to know the potential risks and study them. For example, after doing Botox on the masseter muscle, I started studying the effects of muscle and bone on ageing in the long run—and how it affects the structure of your face and jaw, which led me to develop the ArcticTone treatment which focuses on exercising the muscle of your face so that it can strengthen the bone around the face to prevent ageing. It is not all about collagen and elastin.
