Think talent is hard to come by in Singapore? There actually are more successful and creative locals than you thought. We highlight a number who have made their names here and abroad

Our little red dot may be tiny next to the world’s great nations, but that actually makes our achievements remarkable considering our size by comparison. Coming from a small country definitely doesn’t stop us from going places, as Singaporeans living and working in foreign lands all over the world have proven.

Here are the ones—and there certainly are more beyond this list—who have made their mark on the global landscape in their field of work, and gave Singapore some of its proudest moments. Here’s how they put Singapore on the map with their skill, talent, innovation and determination.

Singapore’s golden boy garnered the nation its very first gold medal in the 100m butterfly event at the Rio Olympics in 2016—a historic win that stunned the world and was celebrated in the country with a victory parade.

While Singaporeans were eagerly waiting and hoping to see a repeat performance at the Tokyo Olympics this year, it did not happen. Understandably, many—including Schooling himself—were disappointed, but as every good athlete knows, every loss offers a lesson to be learned. The swimmer took it in good stride, promising himself that “it will not end like this”. An outpouring of support and encouraging words from Singaporeans were seen on social media, showing how Schooling will always be our champion.

Cynthia Chua

As the founder of the multi-brand Spa Esprit Group, Chua owns one of Singapore’s largest lifestyle businesses, and is a familiar face to Singaporeans, having been profiled in numerous articles and interviews on possibly every media channel.

The powerhouse “boss lady” is known for having the golden touch when it comes to entrepreneurial opportunities, which explains the amazingly diverse portfolio the Spa Esprit Group boasts, spanning beauty brands like Strip and Browhaus to F&B ventures including The Tippling Club and Tiong Bahru Bakery. She had also taken some of her brands overseas, successfully introducing her creative lifestyle concepts overseas.

Anjana Vasan

A Singaporean actress who has been making waves overseas lately, Anjana Vasan came to fame because of her role in We Are Lady Parts, a British sitcom following the lives and friendships of a group of young Muslim women who have come together to form a punk-rock band.

As the central character in the series, Anjana shines as a geeky PhD student, whose path intersects with the women in Lady Parts, the aforementioned punk-rock band, and finds herself being recruited as its lead guitarist. The dramedy scores on how it beats the typical stereotypes surrounding Muslim women and its refreshing depiction of they actually have different world views.

While Anjana’s name is still relatively little-known here (which is set to change), she’s getting substantial media coverage overseas as the show gains a thumbs-up rating from many reviewers and critics. Anjana studied acting in the United Kingdom, is currently based in London, and also a musician and singer who has recently released an EP—definitely a talent to watch.

Anthony Chen

Another Singaporean who brought our nation a first, Anthony Chen was awarded the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 for his directorial debut piece, Ilo Ilo. In that same year, the film, which is the first Singapore feature work to win an award at Cannes, went on to sweep up 40 awards across the world.

His second film, Wet Season, was released last year to good reviews, nominated for six Golden Horse awards, and garnered its lead actress, Yeo Yann Yann, her second Golden Horse win for Best Actress.

Nicolas Travis

Even if you do not know of Nicolas Travis—who was on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2017—you would definitely have heard of Allies of Skin, if you consider yourself a beauty junkie. The brand is the first Singapore skincare brand to be stocked at prominent overseas retailers including Net-a-Porter, Mr Porter, Barneys, Space NK, Bloomingdale’s, Anthropologie and Joyce.

More recently, Travis has launched his second skincare brand, PSA Skin, a second, more budget-friendly line, compared to Allies of Skin. These two brands are also now available at two key retailers in the UK—health and beauty retailer Boots and department store Liberty London.

Andrew Gn

He’s the only Singaporean designer who is a regular fixture at Paris Fashion Week and has had the kind of training that’s the stuff of an aspiring fashion designer’s dream—Gn studied at Central Saint Martins in London and the Domus Academy in Milan, then worked as an assistant to Emanuel Ungaro in Paris.

It was only a matter of time before he started his eponymous label, which he did so in 1996, establishing his recognisably exuberant, East-meets-West aesthetic. Today, the label counts Hollywood celebrities, socialites and royalty as its fans and clients, and has the clout to rival that of many names in the European fashion scene.

Ai-ling Lee

Among the countless people who are drawn to the lure of Hollywood are a rare few who aren’t aspiring actors, but instead have a passion in what happens behind the scenes. Ai-ling Lee is one of them, an Oscar-nominated sound editor who is among the handful of women in the male-dominated sound field. She’s also the first-ever Asian woman to be nominated in the category.

The projects on her résumé demonstrate an impressive diversity and include La La Land, Deadpool, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Thor and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The Singaporean left for Hollywood at age 19 in 1998, armed with her vocational background in audio engineering and no job offer. Lee carved her own path in sound work from the ground up, by approaching film studios for a chance to sit in with their sound departments so that she can observe and learn.
