Mia Samtani, co-founder of gender-neutral beauty brand Glowgear Pro, offers advice on self-care—from keeping skin in tip-top shape to finding balance for the mind

Mia Samtani wants everyone to take the power of self-care into their own hands.

The Hong Kong-based entrepreneur is well-versed in the topic: in 2019, she established the gender-neutral beauty brand Glowgear Pro, which offers a variety of gadgets for skincare. Alongside trendy devices such as quartz and jade face rollers, the company released a new microcurrent and LED light therapy device this year.

Samtani had originally studied dentistry at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2017. But when she later moved back to Hong Kong, life took her down a different path. “The pollution and lifestyle took a toll on my skin and I developed adult-onset acne,” she says. This experience, which Samtani calls “a beautiful curveball”, played an integral role in the launch of her company—she wanted to help others faced with the same issue, and “create products that are for everyone.”

For the last few months, Samtani spent time practicing self-care at home through a combination of skincare products, meditation and nutrition. And though Hong Kong’s social distancing restrictions have now been eased, it is important to retain self-care routines during downtime at home.

Here, she shares her tips on improving skin health, mindfulness—and her favourite health foods to snack on.

Choose Products Wisely

The beauty mogul’s skincare journey started out with natural, at-home remedies consisting of ingredients such as turmeric, yoghurt and citrus fruits—though she’s also a fan of beauty products that kill two birds with one stone.

“I personally look for hybrid products with ingredients that have preventative effects, as well as those that can bring you back to skin health whenever you need,” says Samtani. L’Oréal’s 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Daily Serum is a favourite: “It leaves the skin smooth and plumped.”

Samtani also recommends always following up any washing with a serum, moisturiser or mask best suited to your skin type. “I love using cleansing milk, as it’s very gentle and it doesn’t leave you with dry or tight-feeling skin.”

Aromatherapeutic products, such as lavender and sweet orange facial oils, can be used to uplift the mood, she adds.

Self-care at home doesn’t only mean skincare, but is also about feeling “physically and mentally happy” with yourself, says Samtani.

“I practice a form of transcendental meditation for 20 minutes every day. It’s like my quick ‘happiness booster,’” she adds. “You tend to see improvements in your mood, skin and overall health.”

Samtani also conducts breathwork exercises a few times a day. “Any act of mindfulness can boost your mood; it’s just about taking time out of your day and spending it on yourself.”

Feel-Good Snacks and Supplements

While experiencing premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Samtani goes for her “happy foods”. Cacao cereal, considered a superfood, is a go-to: cacao has myriad purported health benefits.

Foods that are widely believed to boost serotonin—sometimes known as the “feel-good hormone”—include chocolate, which is a favourite.

Samtani also takes a probiotic called Trust Your Gut to improve gut health. “It’s effective and handy because it doesn’t need to be stored in a fridge, so you can carry it around wherever you go.”
