Singapore and Zurich are this year’s most expensive cities to live in, according to a new report—but looking at how much a cup of coffee costs in each city can reveal a different side to the story

In its annual cost-of-living survey, The Economist Intelligence Unit released its take on the world’s most expensive cities to live in. Singapore, which kept its number one title for the ninth year in a row, shares its crown with Zurich, dethroning last year’s other top city New York. Hong Kong, the only other Asian city in the top ten, slid from fourth to fifth.

But what does all this actually mean? Let’s look at how much a cup of cappuccino costs in the top ten most expensive cities and see if it can put some perspective to this ranking.

At CHF5.63 (US$6.40) for a cup of cappuccino, living in Zurich may make you consider brewing your own coffee at home (or even switch to tea altogether).

Singapore’s cappuccinos are slightly cheaper. Around SG$6.30 (US$4.70) should get you a good cup at a decent coffee shop. The big advantage of this city is that if you really want to save (or if you just enjoy locally made coffee), the average cup of kopi—a traditional style of coffee found in Southeast Asian countries—is only SG$1.35 (US$1.00).

As there are two tied contenders for the first place, the ranking omits the second place and we go straight to the third position, which is a tie between Geneva and New York. If you find yourself in either of these two cities, a cup of cappuccino will likely set you back by about the same price—CHF4.79 (US$5.49) in the Swiss city and US$5.48 in the Big Apple.

But, overall, New York is a slightly cheaper place to live in. Even if the cost of renting an apartment in New York is much higher on average than in Geneva, restaurants, groceries and other consumer goods can be more affordable.

Hong Kong, fifth most expensive city in the world

At HK$40 (US$5.10), your average cup of cappuccino in Hong Kong comes in lower than some of the cities ranked lower on the world’s most expensive cities list. Like Singapore, there are several cheaper local options available as well.

At sixth place is Los Angeles, where you can buy a cup of cappuccino for US$5.43, a cost that is comparable to New York City. Then at seventh position is Paris, where cappuccinos will set you back by €3.97 (US$4.30) a cup. Tel Aviv and Copenhagen are tied at eighth place, but Copenhagen is one of the most expensive cities for coffee at 43.67kr (US$6.34) a cup. By comparison, in Tel Aviv, you can get a cup of joe for ₪14.83 (US$4.00). Last but not least, San Francisco takes tenth with its US$5.66 cup of cappuccino, slightly higher than other US cities on this list.
