Embrace the holiday cheer and the spirit of charity by lending a helping hand to those in need

‘Tis the season of giving, and what better way to embrace the spirit of Christmas than by supporting charities that positively impact the lives of those in need? As we gather with loved ones to celebrate the joy and warmth of the holidays, let’s extend that joy to those facing their challenges.

In this article, Tatler has compiled a list of seven noteworthy charities and non-profit organisations (NGOs) making a difference this Christmas season. Grab a cup of hot chocolate, put on your favourite Frank Sinatra album, and explore how you can lend a helping hand to those less fortunate during this festive time.

1. Child Protection Network

The Child Protection Network Foundation (CPN), spearheaded by paediatrician Bernadette J Madrid, aims to increase the accessibility of medical intervention and recovery services for child abuse victims in the Philippines. They helped to establish Women and Children Protection Units (WCPUs), where rehabilitation is achieved through the help of professionals trained in the medical and psychosocial fields.

A portion of proceeds from the sale of Jewelmer’s Noël Pendant will be pledged to CPN from November 6 to December 31.

Founded in 1987, Virlanie aims to ensure that every disadvantaged child is equipped with opportunities to reach their full potential, and through innovative approaches towards childcare and family strengthening, it manages to provide essential social services to many communities across the nation.

‘Likhaya by Virlanie’ is an environmentally conscious pop-up marketplace that empowers women artisans to become financially independent and sources of inspiration within their communities. Artisans who enrol in Virlanie’s community and street-based programs are trained in sewing and jewellery-making. This flexible system grants them the freedom to earn a living while committing to their duties at home.

Support these women through collaborative initiatives by co-creating products for corporate gifts and giveaways.

3. MovED Foundation

MovEd empowers low-income families and their children through a unique pedagogy that stresses the importance of a holistic learning environment. It was founded on the idea to disrupt the painful cycle of poverty and lack of education that tends to recur each generation. Over three thousand children have since graduated since the foundation’s launch in 2012.

You can create positive change in the lives of underprivileged students by sponsoring a child for PHP 1000. One donation can supply a student with school supplies, uniforms and in-class feeding.

4. Liter of Light

This United Nations-recognised international grassroots movement is committed to providing affordable lighting solutions to marginalised communities with limited or no access to electricity. Using an open-source system made of plastic bottles and other locally sourced materials, Liter of Light has installed more than 350,000 lights in more than 15 countries.

Monetary donations to Liter of Light provide locally made lighting systems to remote communities. You may also learn how to create and install bottle lights yourself!
