To make quality treatment more accessible to Malaysians, Mary Chen transformed Beacon Hospital into a state-of-the-art institution that boasts a Cancer Specialist Centre, as well as seven other speciality units for brain and spine, bone and joint, urology and women’s health. Its Cancer Centre, in particular, offers a multidisciplinary approach that includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, radiosurgery and immunotherapy to treat the disease.

The founder has also focused on improving cancer care for underprivileged patients, spearheading Beacon’s free and subsidised treatments to ensure people continue receiving necessary care. With Chen’s leadership, Beacon has become one of the most recognised hospitals in the world. Most recently, the institution was included in Newsweek's World’s Best Hospitals 2024— Malaysia. It has also been re-accredited by the European Society for Medical Oncology for its high standards in supportive and palliative care.

Clinton Campos Hess is at the helm of Unilab, the pharmaceutical firm that develops and manufactures more than 300 prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and healthcare products. Since its founding in 1945, the company has grown from a small drugstore into a healthcare giant with subsidiaries such as Pediatrica (children’s healthcare), Ritemed (generic medicine), Bio-Onco (cancer care), Medichem (mental healthcare) and more.

In March 2024, the Unilab Foundation launched the Unilab Centre for Health Policy (UCHP), an initiative that will provide evidence-based research and policy recommendations to improve healthcare access and affordability in the country. “UCHP does not presume that it can help solve all the issues at hand. It is a modest attempt to bring together like-minded individuals and institutions desirous of nourishing our nation’s health care system,” said Campos Hess. UCHP will support the implementation of the Universal Health Care Act, as well as initiatives for healthcare workers, health financing and health system strengthening.
