Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar clinches another prestigious international recognition for its commitment to provide a nurturing environment for students to thrive

Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar (KTJ) has been awarded the International School of the Year 2023 award by the Boarding Schools Association (BSA). BSA is the largest association of boarding schools in the world and represents 640 boarding schools, 500 of which are based in the UK. The award recognises a leading international boarding school outside of the UK which demonstrates excellence in boarding, facilities and student welfare. KTJ won the same award in 2021.

Principal Dr Glenn Moodie says: “We are delighted to win the International School of the Year award for the second time. We feel it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our trustees, staff, students and parents who drive our school community forward. KTJ is totally committed to boarding and to providing students with a rich 10 all-round education which prepares them to be true global citizens and the leaders of tomorrow.”

As a BSA accredited member, KTJ was required to meet high standards for quality of boarding experience, boarding premises, and boarding leadership and management. Director of Boarding, Gary Slade, explains: “The house parents and boarding staff work incredibly hard to provide an exciting, inclusive and safe boarding environment where our students can flourish. Through boarding, students develop important life skills, gain independence and discover new cultures. These experiences form a strong foundation for our students as they journey through school, to university and life beyond.” Since 1991, KTJ’s boarding community has grown to over 600 students aged 11–19 years and originating from over 24 countries, including China, Indonesia, the Maldives, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. KTJ has seven senior boarding houses, three for female and four for male students. Naquiah junior boarding house accommodates both male and female students in two separate wings.

Boarding is compulsory in KTJ Sixth Form. Outside of the classroom, A-Level students take on important leadership positions, such as the new Student Head of Boarding role; engage in academic discussion; and participate in specialist extracurricular activities which will help boost their university applications. These dedicated ECAs include building a competitive law or medical application, the annual Oxbridge and KTJ Law Moot, Friday Night Enrichment Talks from expert speakers and national competitions in debate, engineering and public speaking. After school each day and weekends, all boarding students enjoy an extensive range of activities. These include more than 100 extracurricular activities, house activities as well as enrichment and entertainment events.

Student welfare remains a top priority at the school. KTJ has developed a bespoke Wellbeing Programme which covers age- specific and timely topics as well life skills, all in line with its holistic ethos. A dedicated Wellbeing Coordinator will also join the school in August 2023. KTJ’s safeguarding policy is well understood and practised by all staff, volunteers and external contractors, and is aligned with the CIS Code of Ethics and in compliance with FOBISIA’s safeguarding objectives. This year, KTJ has introduced the role of Student Safeguarding Ambassadors, and they have been working hard to advance the understanding of safeguarding among the student community.

“Throughout KTJ’s 30-year history, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to provide a high-quality boarding school experience for our students,” explains Moodie, “and we will continually strive to improve the quality of our boarding provision in years to come.”
