Cover Best known as director of the George Town Festival from 2010 to 2018, Joe Sidek is a strong advocate for the arts in Malaysia

The man behind one of the biggest festivals in the region’s arts and culture calendar is honoured with the Tatler Impact Award for Culture in Malaysia

Set against the glamour and grandeur of the Tatler Ball 2024, an evening dedicated to honouring excellence, transformative influence, and meaningful impact, four remarkable individuals from Tatler’s annual Asia’s Most Influential list were celebrated with the prestigious Impact Awards.

These changemakers have harnessed their influence to create profound and lasting change across Asia and beyond through innovative discoveries, pioneering research, or groundbreaking projects. The awards recognised achievements in four key categories: Innovation, Business, Culture, and Humanity.

Among the illustrious honourees was Joe Sidek, founder of the renowned George Town Festival, who received the Culture Award. This accolade celebrates individuals who have made enduring contributions to lifestyle, entertainment, or the arts.

Above Joe has contributed significantly to the elevation of culture in Malaysia

“It is a great honour to be rewarded for something that you love doing. One is really grateful, thank you,” says Joe in an interview shortly after receiving the award.

Joe is celebrated for transforming the George Town Festival into one of Malaysia’s premier cultural events and one of Southeast Asia’s most respected arts festivals since its inception in 2010.

Despite his artistic inclinations, Joe’s career journey was far from linear. Over the years, he has worn many hats, including managing his family’s business, exploring event management, and running a restaurant.

A proud son of George Town in Penang, Joe seized the chance in 2010 to organise a month-long festival commemorating his hometown’s designation as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Driven by a vision to showcase George Town’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit, he brought together a diverse lineup of local and international artists. Unlike many festivals, Joe eschewed the idea of an annual theme, instead focusing on curating high-quality, eclectic performances—a signature approach that propelled the festival to international acclaim until his departure in 2018.

Joe’s success as a festival director paved the way for other notable projects, including the Butterworth Fringe Festival, the Rainforest Fringe Festival, and a Penang edition of Tropfest, the world’s largest short-film festival. His expertise has made him a sought-after speaker on arts curation and festival management, with engagements spanning both regional and global platforms.

Since his appointment as chairman of the revived Penang Arts Council in 2021, Joe has been steadfast in championing Penang’s cultural heritage. His latest endeavour, the Festival of Asia, aspires to establish a platform showcasing the finest of Asian arts—a testament to his unwavering commitment to the region’s cultural evolution.
