One of Malaysia’s most iconic neighbourhoods will host immersive art, music, and heritage activities
The KL Chinatown Festival is set to transform Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown into a hub of cultural and creative activity from November 29 to December 1, 2024. Expected to attract 10,000 attendees, the three-day event will feature a variety of experiences designed to showcase the area’s rich heritage and contemporary appeal.
“Chinatown is more than just a neighborhood; it is a living, breathing archive of Malaysia's cultural soul,” said Shin Chang, co-founder of the festival. This inaugural event, themed Together Gather, aims to highlight Chinatown’s dual identity as a heritage site and a space for modern creativity. Attendees can look forward to heritage walks, Chinese opera, indie music performances, art installations, and more.

Key venues such as REXKL, Jalan Sultan, Kwai Chai Hong, and Lorong Panggung will host a range of programs. REXKL, a former cinema turned cultural hotspot, will anchor the festival with immersive digital art exhibits and interactive workshops. These activities reflect the festival’s mission to position Chinatown as a vibrant cultural hub.
Connor’s Stout Porter, an award-winning Malaysian brand, will sponsor the music pillar of the event, supporting performances by local artists such as babychair, Tasneem, and DJ/producer Shelhiel. “By embracing local talent and creativity, the festival also enhances our cultural landscape and supports the local economy,” said Lim Kok Kean, co-founder and festival director.

Beyond the festivities, the KL Chinatown Festival aims to solidify Chinatown’s role as a cornerstone of cultural tourism. The event organizers hope to create a lasting impact by engaging the community year-round. “This is just the first step,” Shin Chang noted, adding that the festival aspires to position Kuala Lumpur as a global destination where commerce meets creativity.
The festival’s diverse lineup includes multicultural percussion showcases, traditional Chinese opera, heritage walks, and local markets. Evening events will feature contemporary music performances and DJ sets, offering something for every demographic. Art installations and workshops will also provide opportunities for hands-on engagement with Malaysia’s cultural traditions.

The KL Chinatown Festival reflects a broader mission to rejuvenate Chinatown and highlight its role in Kuala Lumpur’s evolving cultural landscape. With its blend of traditional and modern elements, the festival offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the city’s most iconic districts in a new light.
