Front & Female Awards Hong Kong 2024: Dr Pui-Wah Choi by Vivien Khoo

Dr Pui-Wah Choi is a prominent biomedical scientist and entrepreneur recognised for her innovative contributions to women’s health. As the founder of WomenX Biotech Limited, she is dedicated to developing non-invasive technologies that enhance women’s health management. Her flagship innovation involves a groundbreaking blood test that detects human papillomavirus (HPV) through menstrual blood, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional Pap smears. Pui-Wah recognised that traditional screening methods, such as Pap smears, often deter women from regular health checks due to their invasive nature. She aims to create a more accessible alternative, leading to the development of a blood test that utilises menstrual blood to detect HPV and other gynaecological diseases.

From a young age, Pui-Wah found inspiration in the stories of strong female characters. Clara Haslewood, a British woman who moved to Hong Kong with her retired naval officer husband in 1919, is one such figure that inspired her tremendously. Haslewood played a significant role in the movement to abolish the mui tsai system, which involved the practice of purchasing young Chinese girls as domestic servants, often leading to their exploitation. 

Growing up in a family that held conventional views on gender roles, Pui-Wah witnessed firsthand the limitations placed on women. However, instead of accepting these constraints, she became determined to carve out her own path. With a strong educational foundation, she ventured into a field traditionally dominated by men. As one of few female biomedical scientists in this specialised area, she aims to break stereotypes and demonstrate that women can excel in any arena. Her determination to prove that women can achieve anything they set their minds to not only transformed her life but also inspires countless others. Pui-Wah deeply believes that by leveraging technology to dismantle the barriers that hinder women from leading healthy, happy lives, we can create a ripple effect of happiness that benefits everyone.
