This International Women's Month 2022 we honour and celebrate the voice of womankind by speaking to these inspirational ladies

March has become known as a time to celebrate all that it means to be a woman. To acknowledge equality, and to celebrate the many strong, smart, confident, innovative, talented and beautiful women out there in the world. There is power in femininity, in sexuality, and in all types of appearances and perspectives. We hear from women from different backgrounds, industries, and life experiences to understand why this month means a great deal to them.

The Philippines is such a good place to be for women in terms of having access to education and holding leadership roles. However, this is not true for women in other parts of the world. In some countries, women aren’t allowed to open bank accounts or are forced to marry against their will.

This is why we celebrate International Women’s Month - to celebrate how far we have come and understand how far we still need to go towards gender equality. This month, we highlight women and the things we have achieved. I feel that this plays a big role in empowering each other (especially the youth) and making the men recognize the contribution we have in society.

It is important to have International Women’s Month because it celebrates how far women have come in the struggle for equality while creating important discussions around how far we still are in this journey. To this day, women still face a lot of challenges such as gender stereotypes, discrimination and bias. The mere rise in domestic violence and other issues women have endured because of the pandemic should be talked about and addressed. I am no expert but what I do know is that the more we realise that we are not alone in our battles, the more courage we have. When we feel seen, we take that first crucial step into our power.

Celebrating International Women’s Month is important because there still isn’t a single country, no matter how progressive, that can claim to have achieved gender equality, and the pandemic has made things worse. The Global Gender Gap Report 2021 shows the estimated time needed to close the global gender gap has increased from 99.5 years to 135.6 years. With half of the lives in the world at stake, I think we can all agree that is too long a time to wait.

International Women's Month is not just for women—everyone is welcome because no matter your gender or what generation you are from, we all play a part in securing a gender-equal future. When a woman achieves, celebrate it because it paves the way for others and shapes gender attitudes and career aspirations of what women can and cannot do. Seeing is believing: if we can't look up and see women who have been successful, we are less likely to be successful ourselves.

For me, it is important we recognise the contributions and inspirational stories of women around the world. Women's equality is still something we fight for every day in some shape or form. I hope that this month lets us reflect on our journey as women, as well as how can we celebrate and help to empower those around us. To a point that one day, there will be no need for this ‘month’.

Women’s Month is important. It’s a tribute to the sacrifices of all great women—in our lives, and throughout history. A reminder that we are strong, powerful, and limitless. Let’s remember how far we have come on women’s month. But let’s celebrate being a woman all year long and continue the fight.

History is full of female leaders who played a crucial role in developing their communities and promoting creativity. International Women's Day is an empowering way to reach social justice in modern communities.  The standards of a better future call for comparing competency, qualification, experience, capabilities and openness to development; not social status, colour or gender.
