Though she holds a master’s in law from Harvard University, Liz Kao chose to pursue her interests in food, launching her blog, Self-taught Gourmet, where she chronicled her dining experiences, before embarking on Taster, the dedicated food website that expands on her work and brand, which now includes several books, an e-commerce platform, a podcast, products and more.

In 2023, the food critic released the five-episode documentary, Taste Fine Taiwan, highlighting 14 restaurants and 17 chefs, including Taïrroir’s Kai Ho and Le Côté LM’s Lan Shu Chen. The programme, which Kao describes as “Taiwan’s first fine dining documentary”, explores Taiwan’s food culture, the impact of international evaluations on its food scene and the intricacies of fine dining itself.

Kao, of course, shares, her most up-to-date finds and recommendations on Instagram, where she recently lauded the black bear meat at Japan’s L’evo and the Berliner doughnuts from Taiwan’s Perfe’dough.

International wine critic James Suckling established his career at the American and European bureaus of Wine Spectator, where he spent nearly three decades decoding the nuances of fine wines. In 2010, he made his way to Hong Kong and established JamesSuckling.com, the website for wine lovers that now attracts 600,000 unique visitors per year. Along with regular reports on quality wines and videos featuring winemakers and leaders, the website holds wine tastings in cities all over the world, including Seoul, Miami, New York and Bangkok.

In its Top 100 World Wines 2023 report, Suckling crowned the Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siècle Grande Cuvée N.26 as the leading wine of the year. The blend of three vintages is commended for its complex aromas: “...sliced fresh and dried ginger, subtle pie crust, tarte tatin and hints of nutmeg with some salted caramel. Toasted bread, too”. Out of nearly 39,000 wines, it stands above the rest, with the site further describing it as “[e]lectric on the palate”.

After studying chemical engineering at Cambridge University, Loh Yi Jun decided to follow a different path, attending culinary school and then working at a farm-to-table restaurant Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Today, the Malaysian-based gastronome is involved in in all things food, writing about curry and cookies on his website Jun & Tonic and publications such as Taste, Saveur and Food52, talking about the Southeast Asian snack kueh in his Take a Bao podcast and of course creating recipes, which he describes weird and kooky.

The food writer further expounds on recipe creation, sharing that he leans into flavours “influenced by my Malaysian-Chinese upbringing” and applies techniques gleaned from culinary school and his restaurant experience. The result is a medley of interesting delights such as matcha snowcap cookies, croissant cereal and the Jiggly Cat Jelly, of which he writes: “...the thing I love the most about it is its blank expression masking its internal anxiety and existential dread”.
