From the co-founder of Orchard Clinic to the man behind Carousell, here are the most inspiring individuals Tatler spoke to this year

Christmas is over and the new year will be upon us in a matter of days which means that now is that reflective time where we look back on the year and all the lessons we have learnt. 

Though this year was plagued by the ever-mutating Covid-19 virus and much uncertainty, we saw many individuals rise to the challenge to set up businesses, launch products, inspire movements and more. Through it all, we have kept these inspiring individuals at the forefront with our series of interviews and news coverage. 

Here, we look back at the top interviews with some of the most inspiring individuals on Tatler this year.

1. Dione Song, CEO of Love, Bonito

Love, Bonito is one of Singapore’s most successful e-commerce brands and this year, Dione Song took on the role of chief executive officer (CEO), the first in the history of the homegrown omni‑channel fashion brand.

Song joined with gusto and this year, she sat down with Tatler Singapore to talk about how Love, Bonito aims at empowering women to find their unique voices and to refrain from conformity.

2. Cheryl Han, Co-founder of Orchard Clinic

This year, Cheryl Han sat down with Tatler to speak to us about how she got retrenched from her marketing and external communications role and decided to use her passion for yoga to open Orchard Clinic, a postpartum centre.

Her centre treats common postpartum conditions such as vaginal laxity, skin laxity and diastasis recti (a condition seen in women during and after pregnancy that results in the separation of the muscles along the midline of the abdomen). 

Today, Orchard Clinic is preparing to open its third outlet and we found out just how she did it.

3. Liling Ong and Lim Yew Aun, Co-founders of The Cicheti Group

Sustainability has certainly been a buzzword especially as of late and no one knows that better than Liling Ong, a restauranteur who founded The Cicheti Group with her cousin, chef and co-owner Lim Yew Aun.

In November, the dynamic pair sat down with Tatler to talk about how they have ingrained sustainability into their business philosophy by reducing food waste through various collaborations and initiatives. Their most iconic of which was joining the F&B Sustainability Council, a local industry group for restaurants to share ideas on sustainability practices.

It’s not every day that an entrepreneur comes along, starts a company in school and gets to say that they sold it for millions later on in life, so it’s certainly a big deal that Alvin Poh, the founder of web hosting service company Vodien Internet Solutions and CLDY.com can make this claim to fame.

5. Quek Siu Rui, Co-founder and CEO of Carousell

This year, Tatler also interviewed Quek Siu Rui, the co-founder and CEO of Carousell—which is arguably Singapore’s most popular e-commerce marketplace, with one in three in the country signed up as users.

Quek spoke passionately about how he was working hard to cement the company’s leading position in Southeast Asia in this e-commerce category all while attempting to reduce people's impact on the planet by encouraging reuse.

6. Gregory Van, CEO of Endowus

No matter if you’re in the investing space or not, most likely, you would have probably heard of Endowus.

We spoke to Endowus CEO Gregory Van on how he went from making investment losses to being the founding partner of the company, which is Singapore’s first and only Central Provident Fund (CPF) digital advisor.

In our interview with Pamela Hsu Phua, the chief executive officer Asia of VP Bank, we got to document her reflections on her rapid advancement in the competitive financial industry which she navigated with pragmatism and true grit.

The banker is truly an inspiration as one of the few female leaders in the banking industry and today is responsible for the Liechtenstein-headquartered bank’s operations in Singapore and Hong Kong.

8. Dr Tan Sok Chuen, Co-founder of Hip & Knee Orthopaedics

Did you know that only approximately five per cent of orthopaedic surgeons in the United States are women, according to a report by the Association of American Medical Colleges? This means that it is the lowest percentage of female representation in any medical speciality out there. 

Not only is Dr Tan Sok Chuen one of only two female private orthopaedic surgeons in Singapore, she is also the only female hip and knee surgeon in Singapore. She also defied all the odds to set up her own private practice, Hip & Knee Orthopaedics in the middle of a pandemic.

9. Lawrence Wong, Singaporean actor

In January this year, Malaysia-born Singaporean actor Lawrence Wong launched his first skincare line, Grail, a project he has been working on since Singapore went into a circuit breaker last year. 

The star sat down with Tatler to talk about the skincare line as well as to talk about his own skincare journey and how he juggled the long and arduous process of creating a skincare line while balancing his acting career.

10. Cynthia Chua, founder of Spa Esprit Group

Self-care was a huge topic in 2021 and no one knows that better than Spa Esprit founder Cynthia Chua, who is one of Singapore’s most successful female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry.

Recently, Chua, who launched Singapore’s first Brazilian waxing salon, Strip, started Two Lips, Singapore’s first luxury vulva and intimate care brand. 

In December, Tatler got the chance to sit down with Chua as she talked about how she launched Singapore’s very first physical retail space dedicated to vulva care.
