1. When everyone wanted to know the secret status symbols only the truly rich would recognise

When it comes to displaying wealth in Singapore, Singaporeans tend to prefer to keep it on the down-low with many choosing to be more discreet with the indicators of their wealth.

2. When the Kaws: Holiday Exhibition got shut down

This year, one of the biggest scandals happened when the Kaws: Holiday exhibition, was ordered by the Singapore court to stop after non-profit organisation The Ryan Foundation filed an interim injunction. It cited reasons such as intellectual property rights infringement and misuse of confidential information.

5. When we celebrated National Day

This year, our annual National Day Parade (NDP) was quite an interesting one. Shortly before National Day, the Covid-19 cases in Singapore began to spike drastically which prompted the government to postpone the big parade to August 21 and to integrate virtual elements into it.

9. When Japan’s former Princess Mako tied the knot and moved to New York City

One of the year's biggest headlines was when Japan’s former Princess Mako finally married her commoner boyfriend, Kei Komuro, and simultaneously gave up all her royal titles. 

Mako and Komuro first announced their engagement four years ago. However, a financial scandal postponed the wedding which finally happened this year with little fanfare.

In fact, their marriage consisted of an official from the Imperial Household Agency (IHA), which runs the family’s lives, submitting paperwork to a local office.

The typical rituals, ceremonies and fanfare that usually accompany a royal wedding were all done away with. 

Later, the former princess and Kei moved to New York City where they reportedly moved into a one-bedroom apartment in the Hell’s Kitchen district.

10. When Billionaire Li Xiting topped the Forbes Singapore’s 50 Richest For 2021 list

Singapore saw a new face at the top of the Forbes List of Singapore’s Richest for the first time this year and it made big news. 

Li Xiting, the founder of ventilator maker Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co, saw his net worth soar to US$23 billion (S$31 billion) this year which propelled him to the top.

Li was joined by three other new entrants who also made their debut on this year’s Forbes list, which records the 50 richest people in the country.
