For creative, artisanal, and unfussy dishes in an intimate setting that feels just right, Alta Cafe is a go-to, by the team that brought you Sitka and Studio Restaurant. Inspired by minimalist cafes in Paris, London, and Copenhagen, the food served here is simple, made from scratch with local and market ingredients, and served in a relaxed and welcoming café space. While the menu changes seasonally, a crowd favourite is the Alta Burger, which is perfectly indulgent. Try also the rigatoni with white ragu and the green goddess salad.

Hearty pizzas and a wide selection of snacks and small plates make Alta Pizza an easy choice for date night or casual dining with friends. A celebration of all the things the owners love the most, dishes here range from pizza to a focused snack menu alongside hearty pastas and vegetable-forward plates, such as the tomato focaccia with Spanish anchovy and the gnocchi with chicken butter and hazelnuts. A curated selection of refreshing aperitifs and low-intervention wines are also available for those inclined to pair their pizzas with a drink.

Ignis means fire in Latin, and the restaurant stays true to its name with well-executed plates touched with a lick of the flame. For grill-focused dining, Ignis KL is one of the best in town, as the team manages to achieve char and smoke in each dish, made with quality produce that is often sourced from Malaysian farms. The space is comfortable yet elegant, without pretence, and signature dishes include the beef ribs claypot rice, the smoked honey corn with parmesan and shio kombu, and the giant squid with burnt peppers purée and balsamic glaze.

Roost feels like home, with its hearty and comforting dishes served in a warm and inviting atmosphere. With a focus on seasonal ingredients, it offers an unpretentious menu of fresh pastas, small bites, and meats and poultry to share. These include the locally-sourced white corn ribs, the prawn bisque risotto, and the free-range half chicken, served with chimichurri and chicken jus. These dishes are best paired with the selection of wines or craft beers, available by the bottle or on tap.

With timeless and mature cooking, there is no restaurant like Studio Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Few can execute dishes as seasoned chef-owner Christian Recomio does, while co-owner Jenifer Kuah runs the floor with grace. The contemporary tasting menu draws inspiration from travel, with Malaysian and Scottish ingredients treated with a European sensibility, showing that local gourmands need not travel to find delectable global cuisine. The restaurant’s small but intimate interior, featuring dark wood and clean lines, is an amalgamation of the owners’ favourite restaurant design and features from their favourite cities of Barcelona, London, and Copenhagen. The team is always ready to provide pairing suggestions from a focused selection of natural wines.
