Through the many faces they see up close, makeup artists become attuned to changes in skin hydration, texture, resilience and fatigue. Here’s what the science says these markers reveal about skin longevity
A makeup artist spends an unusual amount of time looking at a face. Not from across a room or through a phone screen, but inches away, under bright light, often with their fingers on the skin. When the client is someone they work with regularly, they may see that face after a good night’s sleep and after a 20‑hour flight; during calm stretches and punishing ones; at 25, 35 and 50. They are not trained to diagnose. They are trained to notice.
Science is beginning to test whether that instinct holds up. Skin is being studied as an accessible measure of biological change: a tissue that can be photographed, sampled and repeatedly measured for elasticity, barrier function, inflammation and other features that also change with age. A 2026 review in GeroScience describes skin as a potential “sentinel” of systemic ageing, while stressing that translating these observations into clinically useful biomarkers remains a work in progress.

Recent human studies have begun testing the idea. In the INSPIRE‑T cohort, researchers measured skin elasticity and viscoelasticity in 441 adults aged 20 to 93. In older participants, poorer skin elasticity was associated with lower scores on a broader measure of functional health encompassing cognition, locomotion, psychological health, vitality and sensory function; poorer elasticity was also associated with greater systemic inflammation. The paper was published in Aging Cell in 2025.
Another study published in 2026, used images from 2,515 Korean women aged 20 to 69 to develop a measure of ageing around the eyes based on wrinkles, pigmentation and morphological features. After accounting for chronological age, the resulting “periorbital skin age” was associated with participants’ self‑reported disease histories. It’s important to note the limitations of this study: the population consisted entirely of Korean women, medical history was self‑reported, and the authors were researchers at LG H&H. It is biomarker research, not evidence that somebody can read disease from a face.
Researchers are now asking the larger question directly. In August 2026, L'Oréal Groupe and the NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity opened a joint laboratory in Singapore—an industry-academic partnership, not an independent study—that measures participants' skin, scalp and hair alongside cardiovascular, metabolic, cognitive and musculoskeletal markers. The researchers want to know whether skin ageing tracks systemic ageing, or follows a partly independent path of its own.
Makeup artists have been observing a much less technical version of that puzzle for decades.

What touch reveals about hydration
For Kodo Nishimura, the Japanese makeup artist and Buddhist monk, the assessment begins with touch. Before applying foundation, he gently presses a finger against the skin. “If the skin feels supple and slightly sticks to my finger for about a second, I know it is well hydrated,” he says. Dry skin reminds him of a dry sponge: foundation remains on the surface, drawing attention to texture instead of disappearing into it.
Melbourne-based makeup artist Nigel Stanislaus makes a similar assessment after cleansing. He looks for “dryness, dehydration, oil, redness or texture,” and says experience taught him to recognise that oily‑looking skin can still lack moisture. Foundation gives him another clue: poorly hydrated skin simply behaves differently underneath it.

There is physiology behind that distinction. Sebum and stratum‑corneum hydration are separate measurable properties rather than opposite ends of a single scale. In one study of 62 Thai women, the group with self‑described oily skin did indeed produce considerably more sebum, but actually had lower measured stratum‑corneum hydration than the dry‑skin group.
But this is also where the limits of reading health from appearance begin. Skin that looks or feels dry does not necessarily mean its owner is dehydrated. Climate, air conditioning, cleansing, age, skin disease, medications and skincare products can all affect surface hydration. Even the familiar advice to drink more water has thinner evidence behind it than beauty folklore suggests. A systematic review found only weak evidence that increasing water intake improves skin hydration, with possible small benefits particularly among people whose intake had previously been low.
In other words, Nishimura’s finger test may be very useful for deciding what to put under foundation. But it is not a hydration test for the rest of the body.
Why tiredness is harder to see than it looks
This is echoed by Natasha Moor, makeup artist and founder of Natasha Moor Cosmetics. Years spent working close to people’s faces have made her quicker at recognising when skin looks distressed: redness, bumps, inflammation or a sudden change in texture. But she draws a deliberate boundary around what that observation means.
“I’m very careful not to diagnose; I’m a makeup artist, not a dermatologist. But I’ve become very good at recognising when skin doesn’t look like its usual healthy self,” she shares. If skin looks painful or compromised, she would rather use less product and, when appropriate, suggest that the client see a professional.

This is where the artists’ observations line up particularly well with experimental research. Jung Saem Mool, one of South Korea’s most influential makeup artists, says the difference is easiest to see when she works with the same client for several days. After insufficient sleep, she may notice drier or duller skin, puffiness around the eyes and makeup that no longer adheres as smoothly. After more rest and less stress, the same face can appear clearer and more relaxed.
Stanislaus has seen celebrities, models and musicians arrive after long‑haul flights and weeks of touring. “You can see when skin is exhausted,” he says. Poor sleep and prolonged stress, in his experience, can appear as dullness, dehydration and tired‑looking eyes.
Controlled experiments suggest that at least some of those changes are measurable. In one study, 24 healthy women aged 30 to 55 were restricted to three hours of sleep for two consecutive nights. Afterwards, tests showed lower hydration, compromised skin-barrier function and a drop in elasticity. Standardised photos also captured a visible loss of brightness and tone.

Psychological stress can affect the barrier too. In a laboratory experiment involving 25 women exposed to a stressful interview, researchers found delayed recovery of the skin barrier alongside increases in cortisol, norepinephrine and inflammatory markers. A separate group subjected to one night of sleep deprivation also showed impaired barrier recovery.
But even here, the face is an unreliable detective. A larger randomised sleep experiment involving 181 people found that features such as darker under‑eyes, reduced eye openness and changes in facial colour influenced how fatigued a face appeared to observers. Yet those characteristics could not reliably identify which participants had actually been sleep‑deprived. In fact, the sleep‑deprived and well‑rested groups did not differ significantly on the objective facial measures the researchers tested. In short, someone can look tired without being sleep‑deprived or they can be sleep‑deprived without looking obviously tired. So a makeup artist may be seeing something real, but appearance alone cannot tell them what caused it.

Why skin ageing isn’t the same for everyone
The same caution applies to ageing. Moor finds that younger skin generally has more “bounce,” while mature skin can be less tolerant of heavy textures and powders. Her solution is usually not more coverage but less: more preparation, lighter layers and strategic concealing.
Jung is wary of making age itself the rule. She has worked with older clients who have excellent elasticity and younger ones with sensitive, acne‑prone or atopic skin. Although collagen and other structural components change with age, she says the variation among people in their 60s and 70s can be striking.
Modern skin‑ageing research increasingly reflects that complexity. A major 2026 review in The EMBO Journal describes skin ageing as the combined product of intrinsic cellular ageing and the “cutaneous exposome”: ultraviolet radiation, pollution, tobacco smoke, nutritional factors, climate and other exposures. Different elements of skin structure and function therefore do not simply change according to chronological age alone.

Lifestyle may alter some of those trajectories too. Nishimura has long noticed what he describes as “unusually healthy‑looking skin” among people who exercise regularly. The habit has experimental backing. In a 16‑week intervention involving sedentary middle‑aged Japanese women, both aerobic and resistance training improved measured skin elasticity and upper‑dermal structure. Resistance training also increased dermal thickness. Sixty‑one women entered the trial and data from 56 were included in the analysis, so it remains a small study, but it offers a biological basis for something makeup artists often describe more vaguely as resilience or “glow”.
Still, the less glamorous habits have considerably stronger evidence behind them. Stanislaus points to consistency, moisturising and sun protection. The science bears him out: one of the best‑known trials followed 903 Australian adults younger than 55. After 4.5 years, those assigned to daily broad‑spectrum sunscreen had 24 percent less progression of photoageing than participants instructed to use sunscreen at their own discretion. Longevity skincare, in other words, rewards repetition over novelty.

When skincare becomes overtreatment
Perhaps the strongest consensus among the four artists has little to do with identifying health at all. It is knowing when to stop. “Stop attacking your skin. Start listening to it,” Stanislaus says.
Moor makes almost the same argument. The clients whose skin seems to fare best over time, she says, are often not those cycling continuously through new treatments and products. Her own experience with aggressive treatments and strong retinols made her increasingly sceptical of the assumption that an effective ingredient must therefore be right for every face. “Give your skin hydration, protection and consistency," she says, "and learn to recognise when enough is enough.”
Jung frames the same principle slightly differently. Rather than following a routine blindly, she encourages people to pay attention to what their skin has actually been exposed to: heat, cold, air conditioning, prolonged makeup wear, dryness or irritation. Her question is simple: “What condition is my skin in today?”
Stop attacking your skin. Start listening to it
Jung’s question is close to a definition of what makeup artists actually do. They cannot look at dull skin and diagnose poor sleep, or press a cheek and determine whether someone needs more water. They cannot distinguish stress from a damaged barrier, a new skincare product or an underlying dermatological condition simply by looking. Skin is affected by too many things at once for appearance to function as a reliable medical test.
What experienced makeup artists possess instead is something quieter: a trained eye for texture, colour, response and change, sharpened by years of watching the same faces leave and return, changed. They notice when foundation suddenly stops behaving as it usually does, when skin looks unusually reactive, when a familiar face simply seems different—without ever needing to know why.
Not needing to know why isn’t a limitation on the observation. It’s what makes it reliable. A makeup artist has nothing to gain from a diagnosis and nothing to lose by declining to offer one—only an accurate read of what a face is doing right now, and the judgement to act on it, or not.
Longevity science is only beginning to build instruments sophisticated enough to formalise that same reading. Long before any biological clock or imaging system can put a number on a face, someone with a finger pressed lightly to the skin already has an answer.
