From animals and hot water to forests, flotation tanks and sound baths, researchers are studying other routes to fight stress
There is a point at which perfectly good stress advice starts to sound like white noise: sleep more, exercise, eat well, spend less time online, meditate. None of it is wrong. But knowing what helps and actually getting a frazzled mind or body to cooperate are two different problems.
That gap has fuelled interest in less conventional approaches—hydrotherapy, forest bathing, animal-assisted therapy, flotation tanks, breathwork, sound. Some now have research behind them that is genuinely difficult to dismiss. Others are still coasting on claims well ahead of the evidence.
For everyday stress—and alongside professional care where that is needed—it may be less about finding the single best way to relax, and more about finding a route that actually works for you.
Animal therapy: man’s best healer
Animal therapy spans a range of methods—it can mean a structured session with a specially trained dog and handler, or full equine-assisted psychotherapy on horseback. (Sadly, it does not mean your cat sitting on your lap while you doomscroll, because however therapeutic that feels, it is not the intervention researchers are actually studying.)
The evidence is harder to wave away as anecdote than it once was. A 2026 meta-analysis pooling 35 randomised controlled trials and 2,391 adults found that animal-assisted therapies were linked to reductions in depression, anxiety and stress. The results varied a good deal between studies, which is less a red flag than a reflection of how differently the animal, the person and the therapy itself can be assembled from one trial to the next.
Dogs provide the clearest results. A 2025 review of randomised trials in university students found a moderate overall drop in stress and anxiety following canine-assisted therapy, with the biggest gains among students who started out most distressed.

Horses deserve more caution. Equine-assisted services have shown promise in specific groups, notably military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. But a 2024 meta-analysis of 13 studies and 344 veterans found only one of those studies at low risk of bias. Promising is not the same as proven, and the evidence is not yet strong enough to turn horse-assisted therapy into a general prescription for everyday stress.
There may be a number of reasons why animals help at all. Interacting with one brings touch, attention, social connection, movement, novelty—and a break from whatever thoughts were driving the stress in the first place. With horses, there is also the added satisfaction of learning a skill and getting visibly better at it. Researchers have proposed hormonal and autonomic mechanisms too, though these remain harder to pin down.
What’s the verdict on animal therapy?
Animal-assisted interventions have a meaningful, growing evidence base, particularly for anxiety and stress— but “animal therapy” is not one standardised treatment. Structured canine programmes currently make the cleaner case for everyday stress; the more persuasive equine research still belongs to particular clinical groups.

Hydrotherapy: temperature matters
Hydrotherapy has become one of wellness's great catch-all terms. Depending on the spa, it might mean soaking in warm mineral water, alternating between hot and cold pools, aquatic massage, underwater exercise—or climbing voluntarily into a tub full of ice, for reasons that presumably felt sound at the time.
These are, physiologically speaking, not remotely the same experience.
Traditional balneotherapy—the therapeutic use of mineral or thermal water, sometimes combined with mud treatments and a particular climate—has a surprisingly substantial research history behind it. In a 2026 multicentre randomised trial, 243 adults with moderate-to-high stress went through 11-day programmes at six Lithuanian medical spas. Those on different balneotherapy programmes showed improvements in stress, anxiety, fatigue, sleep and several other measures, some of which held up at follow-up. However, one group also received nature therapy, and the treatments themselves mixed mineral water with therapeutic mud and other spa components—so the trial cannot isolate the water as the sole cause.
A smaller but more revealing 2024 randomised crossover study stripped the experience down to basics. Twenty adults spent 30 minutes immersed in hot water at roughly 39°C, with air jets, water jets or no massage at all. Anxiety and salivary cortisol dropped after immersion regardless—adding underwater massage bought no extra psychological benefit. Sometimes, it turns out, the fancy part is not the active ingredient.

Cold water tells a different story entirely. A 2025 systematic review of 11 randomised studies and 3,177 participants found no significant drop in stress immediately after cold-water immersion, an hour later, or at 24 or 48 hours. A reduction did turn up at the 12-hour mark, while inflammatory markers rose straight after immersion—hardly shocking, given that sudden cold is itself a stressor on the body.
None of that rules out other reasons to enjoy a cold plunge, from the alertness it brings to the simple satisfaction of doing something unpleasant on purpose. It does make the now-ubiquitous claim that ice water “switches off stress” hard to defend.
Hot water or cold—the verdict
Warm-water immersion and more structured balneotherapy have credible, if still heterogeneous, evidence behind them. Cold plunges may have other effects, but they should not currently be sold as the obviously superior stress treatment. If relaxation is the objective, the science may favor the less dramatic end of the pool.
Flotation-REST therapy: when the solution is less stimulation
A flotation tank approaches stress by subtraction. Flotation restricted environmental stimulation therapy—flotation-REST, mercifully—places a person in highly buoyant saltwater while minimising external light, sound, temperature change and physical pressure. Unlike a meditation class, it does not ask you to ignore the world around you so much as switch most of it off for an hour.
A 2025 systematic review identified 63 flotation-REST studies and 1,838 participants across stress, anxiety, pain, sleep and athletic performance. Six looked specifically at stress, and the literature as a whole pointed toward reductions in stress and clinical anxiety—though the volume and quality of studies still trail well behind what exists for mainstream psychological treatments.
The more interesting studies use an active control rather than simply comparing floating with doing nothing at all. In one 2024 randomised crossover study, 50 healthy adults tried both flotation-REST and an hour on a warm waterbed in a dark, quiet room. They reported greater relaxation and lower anxiety and tiredness after floating. In other words, floating appeared to add something even when the comparison condition already had warmth, quiet, darkness and rest sewn up.
That makes it especially relevant to a modern form of stress built on constant sensory demand. For anyone who finds closing their eyes and “trying not to think” almost comically impossible, cutting incoming stimulation altogether may be easier than learning to filter it.

What research says (or not) about flotation-REST
Flotation-REST is one of the more intriguing approaches to emerge in this space. The evidence is encouraging rather than definitive, drawn from small research populations with no settled protocol. Treat it as a serious relaxation tool; calling it an established treatment for anxiety or other mental-health conditions would outrun what the research currently supports.
Forest bathing: Japan’s nature-based intervention
Japan’s practice of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, sounds far less fringe now than it did when the term first began travelling internationally. The broader evidence on contact with nature has grown substantially since.
A major 2026 umbrella review in Nature Human Behaviour drew on 116 systematic reviews, roughly 3,870 primary studies and an estimated 10 million-plus participants. Across that enormous body of work, nature-based interventions were linked to reductions in anxiety, depressive symptoms and negative affect, plus greater relaxation. The authors flagged a familiar weakness, too: many studies compared nature interventions with passive controls, which makes it harder to say exactly which part of the experience did the work.
Zooming in on forest therapy specifically, another 2026 meta-analysis of 25 studies and 1,876 participants found reductions in perceived stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. The studies still varied considerably, but the evidence for psychological stress came out graded more favourably than for some of the other outcomes.
What is still unclear is the mechanism. A walk through woodland changes several things at once—sound, temperature, air quality, visual complexity, physical activity, attention, and sheer distance from whatever was stressful in the first place. Researchers have proposed everything from attention restoration to shifts in autonomic activity. None of them needs to be the answer for the broader conclusion to hold: natural environments change how people feel.

Now literal tree hugging is a more entertaining question. Small laboratory experiments have found physiological differences when people touch untreated wood rather than synthetic materials. But that is a long way from the claim made by “grounding” or “earthing” advocates—that direct contact with the earth transfers electrons into the body in a way that meaningfully treats stress.
Grounding research does include some small controlled studies, and it should not be dismissed purely because the idea sounds odd. But the evidence base is far thinner, and the proposed electrical mechanism far less established, than the case for nature exposure improving psychological wellbeing more broadly.
So is forest bathing science or woo-woo?
Go into the forest with confidence that nature exposure has a legitimate research base. Hug the tree if you enjoy hugging trees. What the evidence does not currently require is a theory about therapeutic electrons passing from the ground into your body.
Cognitive behavioural therapy: can help come through an app?
Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, asks people to notice the patterns in their own thinking and behaviour, then learn structured ways of responding differently. Its close relations work along the same lines: mindfulness-based cognitive therapy folds mindfulness practice into that cognitive framework, while mindfulness-based stress reduction is related but distinct again. Wellness marketing tends to blur the three together, but they are not interchangeable: each is a defined programme with its own structure.
CBT was developed in the 1960s and 70s, and is a well-established field—what has genuinely changed is access, not the underlying method: programmes that once meant regular face-to-face sessions can now increasingly be delivered online or through a phone. A meta-analysis of 14 randomised comparisons and 1,831 adults with elevated stress found that internet-delivered CBT produced sizeable reductions in self-rated stress, alongside improvements in anxiety and depression.
A much larger 2025 analysis examined 63 randomised trials and 20,454 participants using self-administered mobile interventions. Stress-management programmes, problem-solving therapy and mindfulness meditation came out among the better performers. Tellingly, the researchers found no conclusive evidence that adding human support or fancier technology made an intervention more effective.
Mindfulness itself continues to hold up under scrutiny. A 2026 meta-analysis of 17 randomised trials and 1,641 adults found that mindfulness-based interventions reduced perceived stress, across both face-to-face and digital formats.
Disliking meditation does not necessarily mean structured approaches such as CBT or mindfulness-based therapy will be a poor fit. These programmes may involve exercises, behavioural changes and specific cognitive skills rather than simply sitting still and observing your thoughts.
This is the distinction that matters most for those who have "tried meditation", hated it, and quietly written the whole thing off. The version most people bounce off is the unstructured one—an instruction to sit still and watch your thoughts go past, with nothing built around it. A structured programme is different: exercises to work through, behavioural changes to make, specific skills to build.
The strong evidence base for CBT
Before assuming you need a more unusual therapy, it may be worth moving from generic wellness advice to a structured psychological method. The crucial word is structured: an evidence-based CBT or mindfulness program is not equivalent to whatever happens to be labeled “mental wellness” in an app store.
Sound therapy: from music therapy to binaural beats and singing bowls
The definition of sound therapy is broad, and body of scientific study spans a whole range. At one end sits music therapy, an established clinical discipline where trained practitioners use music toward specific therapeutic goals. A 2025 systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis of 51 studies and 3,276 participants found a moderate improvement in self-reported anxiety. Physiological changes were smaller and not statistically significant—a useful reminder that feeling calmer and producing a measurable bodily change are not always the same thing.
Move from music therapy to singing bowls and the evidence gets considerably younger. A 2025 systematic review identified 19 clinical studies, including nine randomised trials, and found possible benefits for anxiety, sleep, depression and other outcomes. But populations and protocols varied so much that broad conclusions are hard to draw.

Binaural beats—slightly different tones played into each ear to create the illusion of a third, rhythmic beat—sit on similarly shaky ground. A 2024 review found 12 randomised studies: eight reported at least one stress-related benefit, four found no effect at all, and unclear randomisation, blinding problems and wildly varying protocols ruled out any confident recommendation.
Tuning forks, and claims about specific “healing frequencies”, are harder still to substantiate. Research isolating tuning forks alone is sparse, and studies often bundle them in with singing bowls, massage or other treatments—making it impossible to say which element, if any, caused the change observed.
So lying still in a quiet room while resonant sound fills it may genuinely be relaxing. That is not evidence that a particular frequency is repairing an organ, clearing an energy blockage or “retuning” the nervous system.
Verdict: is the science sound around sound therapies?
Sound can plausibly be part of stress reduction, and formal music therapy has respectable evidence. Singing bowls are promising but early; binaural beats remain mixed; claims about tuning forks and specific healing frequencies currently run well ahead of the science.
So: feeling better after a sound bath is a valid experience. though it is not proof of every explanation offered for why you felt better.
Breathwork: the oldest method of stress management

“Take a deep breath” may be one of the oldest pieces of advice for stress there is. Research into deliberate breathing suggests the cliché has something to it—but technique appears to matter more than the cliché lets on.
A 2023 meta-analysis pooling 12 randomised controlled trials and 785 adults found that breathwork was linked to a small-to-moderate reduction in self-reported stress, along with improvements in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Most of the studies carried a moderate risk of bias, and the researchers themselves warned against letting enthusiasm outrun the evidence.
One randomised study gives a sense of what “structured breathing” actually means in practice. Participants practised five minutes a day for a month, using either mindfulness meditation or one of three breathing techniques: cyclic sighing, box breathing, or cyclic hyperventilation with breath retention. All groups improved, but breathwork—particularly exhale-focused cyclic sighing—produced bigger increases in positive mood and larger drops in respiratory rate than mindfulness meditation did.
The point is not that cyclic sighing has somehow beaten meditation. It was one study, run remotely, and its longer-term effects are unclear. What it does show, rather neatly, is that changing your breathing in a defined way is testable in a way “breathe deeply until you calm down” never was.
This is also where technology such as heart-rate-variability biofeedback may eventually earn its keep: rather than simply telling someone to relax, it can show them their own physiological response while they experiment with slower breathing. Evidence for its effect on perceived stress is less consistent, though, so the hardware should not be mistaken for the established part of the intervention—that is still the breathing.
The bottom line on breathwork
Controlled breathwork is cheap, accessible and backed by enough randomised evidence to be worth taking seriously. A couple of important caveats, however: effects look modest rather than transformative, and “breathwork” covers techniques that can be physiologically quite different from one another. For everyday stress, the slower, controlled approaches make a more straightforward case than the dramatic hyperventilation protocols.
There is more than one way to calm
If this research leads anywhere, it is away from the idea that there is one superior stress technique waiting to be found. Someone caught in repetitive thoughts may respond to CBT because it gives those thoughts some structure. Someone overwhelmed by constant stimulation may do better in a forest or a flotation tank. Warm water asks very little of someone who is simply exhausted. Animals offer connection without demanding conversation. Music and controlled breathing give the attention somewhere concrete to land.
Personal preference matters, because an intervention you hate is not going to become part of your life. But preference is not the same as scientific validation—and it’s important to remember that when it comes to wellness, where a pleasant experience can acquire an elaborate biological backstory remarkably fast.
The evidence rarely backs up the grandest language: “resetting” a nervous system, flushing out stress hormones, absorbing the earth's electrons, correcting the body with a healing frequency. What it increasingly does support is less dramatic and arguably more useful: that different combinations of attention, environment, sensory input, social connection, breathing and learned psychological skills can genuinely change how stressed people feel.
If the usual advice has stopped working, the answer may not be to try harder at the same routine. It may be to choose a different route in—and to know enough about the evidence to tell an interesting one from an expensive story.
