Marilen Elizalde talks about the two modalities she's grown attuned to which give her a meaningful life

A wellness warrior is someone who strongly advocates for health through several practices. These may include consistently hitting the gym, engaging in outdoor activities, achieving physical goals that intensely get the sweat out, or doing Zumba, Pilates and CrossFit while convincing people to be physically and mentally active. Thus, when it comes to promoting and following a lifestyle of health and wellness, there is an abundance of choices. Marilen Elizalde, however, opts to be a yoga advocate and aromatherapy enthusiast.

“After I realised I was not going to have a career in dance, I switched from jazz and tap classes to aerobic classes,” says this enthusiast who once dreamt of a dance profession. “I discovered the gym and slowly began to enjoy it. I started with weight training and aerobic classes, then went to the gym for regular workouts.”

Then came yoga.

“About 20 years ago, I began my yoga journey as an alternative to gym workouts after my daughter was born. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with yoga,” shares Elizalde. One of the first factors that drew her to yoga was the fact that, according to her, the daily practice is so fluid that no two days are alike. “Sometimes I feel great on the mat, sometimes I feel like I’m dragging a ton of bricks. Some days are long and arduous, some days are short and sweet,” she adds.

Yoga means union: allowing the body, mind and spirit to become aware and move as one. Some people see it as a physical activity that tests one’s ability to stretch and hold positions in place to calm the mind; but for Elizalde, the meaning of yoga is deeper. “To move into stillness. To ground me when my mind is going in so many directions. To reset, recharge,” says Elizalde.

As drawn as she is to yoga, Elizalde also got attracted to a complementary practice of aromatherapy, a serendipitous discovery. She was invited by a friend to a talk on essential oils which left her with immense curiosity about the power of these plant extracts. She wanted to learn more. “I call it [aromatherapy] nature’s pharmacy that can help us stay above the wellness line in the most natural way possible. So, I studied, listened and learnt.”

Elizalde explains that essential oils are highly concentrated compounds more powerful than dried herbs in maintaining healthy cells and levels of homeostasis and equilibrium. “The human body is so compatible with plants; essential oils work in the same way for us as it does for themselves. However, not all essential oils are created equal. We need to be sure the oils we use are of the highest quality if we are interested in their beneficial action,” reminds Elizalde. The passionate yogini/aromatherapist has made it a habit to share her two passions whenever she can. She can give the best testimonial, being a practitioner herself of both.

As a yoga teacher, Elizalde always tells her students that the goal is not to be the best acrobat but to find stillness and union. They usually get frustrated, she says, when they cannot achieve their physical goals so she reminds them that the daily practice of breathing and focus should be the ultimate goal. She keys in that patience is a must for yoga and aromatherapy. It's all about going back to the basics.

According to Elizalde, the first aromatherapists can be traced back to ancient civilisations, citing Cleopatra as an example for having been historically noted as using Neroli oil to keep her skin alluring and attractive. Old accounts also tell about Egyptians concocting perfume or medicine with mixtures of different herbs. Modern science, then, extracted the chemical constituents of plants and replicated them to produce modern medicine.

Using her knowledge of the history and the wonders of aromatherapy, Elizalde created her own brand, Uma by Marilen, consisting of her own essential oils formulations as well as curated wellness workshops on health and wellness, breath and movement, aromatherapy and nutrition, for individuals and groups.

It is getting to be the best of times for this wellness warrior. “I think we are slowly moving towards a more holistic approach to wellness. People are slowly becoming more aware that when we talk health, we must look at the individual in its entirety—physically, emotionally and spiritually—to understand what is truly going on,” observes Elizalde. So, she continues on this journey to attain holistic health and stay above the wellness line. A life below the wellness line is, to Elizalde, unacceptable. Mincing no words, she avers: “It is illness.”
